Manual Tire Deflation

If you venture offroad, then you should air down your tires before hitting the trail. To air down you must remove your valve caps.

If you air down, you must air up before hitting the road. The deformation of deflated tires will cause dangerous heat build up in the tires at highway speeds. To air up, you must remove your valve caps.

Alligator Valve Cap

While removing and replacing your valve caps twice every run and for regular tire maintenance is not difficult, it can become inconvenient. Eliminate threading and unthreading your valve caps all together with the Alligator Double Seal Valve Cap. Inflate, deflate, and gauge directly through the Alligator. There is no need to remove it.

What Can Brown Do For You?

The Alligator was designed for commercial fleet maintenance, where it is estimated that it takes a full 20 minutes to check the air pressure on the tires of a tractor trailer when each valve cap must be removed and replaced. Imagine the time required to check the tire pressures on an entire fleet and you can see why almost all commercial fleets use the Alligator Valve Cap.

Unprotected Valve Core & Valve Stem

Leaving the valve cap off for convenience is not an option. The sensitive valve core will be exposed to debris and the environment and will quickly deteriorate. Because the Alligator allows gauging and inflating without removing, it pays for itself the first time its used. While the Alligator was designed for use on tractor trailers, it is equally applicable to fourwheelers, who must air down and air up frequently.

Protected Valve Core & Valve Stem

The Alligator simply threads onto your valve stem. Once attached, you can inflate, deflate, and gauge tire pressure with Alligator attached. Furthermore, your valve core is protected against water, debris, as well other contamination and decay from exposure to the elements.

The Alligator's grooved head is compatible with all clip-on air chucks, including the Power Tank Heavy-Duty Inflator. Unfortunately, the Alligator is not compatible with the Staun Tire Deflators, because the Alligator's head is grooved and not threaded. However, we maintain that the Alligator is still more convenient than a standard valve cap even when it must be removed to enable the fitment of Staun Tire Deflators, because one need not remove the valve caps yet again to air up before hitting the road.

The only real disadvantage to the Alligators is that they make the valve stem longer. Shown above are a standard valve stem with standard cap on the left, and a standard valve stem with Alligator on the right. The longer valve stem is more susceptible to damage on difficult trails.

Trail Damaged Wheels

For difficult trails, we recommend removing the Alligators and fitting a standard valve cap. For daily driving or easy trails, the convenience of the Alligator rules.

REMA Metal Sealing Valve Cap

If you prefer a standard valve cap, there is the REMA Metal Sealing Valve Cap. This is the same valve cap that we provide free of charge with the purchase of Equal Tire Balancer.

The quality of this unit is very high. The sides are knurled for easier threading on and off, and the entire unit is nickel plated to resist corrosion.

The Metal Sealing Valve Cap does more than protect the valve core against contamination and deterioration. The inside of the unit features a gasket to seal the valve stem against leaks, even if the valve core becomes leaky or otherwise fails. These valve caps are an added safety measure against underinflated tires.

Staun Tire Deflators

However, our favorite method of deflating tires is Staun Tire Deflators.

The Coilhose Pneumatics Four-Way Schrader Valve Repair Tool is fitted with four separate tools that enable servicing and maintenance of both valve cores and valve stems.

Exterior Thread Chaser

The bottom of the Tool has a thread chaser for chasing mangled threads on Schrader valve threads.

Simply thread the Tool onto the the Schrader valve's brass threads to clean them up.

The top end of the tool features a two-pronged tip for unthreading valve cores.

Every Schrader valve core features two flats on the tip for easy removal. The two prongs on the Four-Way Schrader Valve Repair Tool mate with the two flats on the core head and permit the core to be threaded out.

To remove the core, simply place the pronged end of the Four-Way Schrader Valve Repair Tool into the valve stem.

Using this method, valve cores are easily removed without damaging them. Do not use needlenose pliers for this task.

Broken Valve Core

Valve cores often break, which is the primary reason to replace them in the first place.

The Four-Way Schrader Valve Repair Tool features a screw extractor that is similar in concept and design to an Easy Out. This tool features a reverse thread and a slotted side for biting into broken valve cores.

To use the valve core extractor, simply insert the Tool into the broken valve core and turn counterclockwise. The Tool will bite into the center of the broken valve core and permit you to unthread the broken valve core from the valve stem.

The fourth tool on the Four-Way Schrader Valve Repair Tool is a thread chaser for the inside of the valve stem.

Insert a valve stem into the wheel, thread the hinged end of the Tubeless Valve Tool onto the valve stem, press the padded portion of the Tubeless Valve Tool on the edge of the rim,

and lever the valve stem into place. It takes a lot longer to explain this task than to perform it. It's a very simple and effective way to install valve stems, as the Tubeless Valve Tool provides tremendous leverage and even the tightest valve stems easily pop into place. There is no damage whatsoever incurred by the valve stem or rim using this method. If you are using pliers to pull your valve stems into place, you are doing it incorrectly.

Breaking The Bead With A Hi-Lift Jack

Changing out a broken valve stem in the field is not difficult, but does require some work, as the bead must be broken to access the valve stem. Our favorite method is to use a Hi-Lift Jack and the vehicle's weight.

Valve stems shorter than 1.25" do exist, but we have tried them and found them generally too short for our purposes and for many wheel designs.

Power Tank Heavy-Duty Inflator

Many of the very short valve stems are often too tucked on several wheel designs and difficult to use with devices like the Power Tank Heavy Heavy-Duty Inflator's clip-on air chuck.

Valve Core

The filtered valve core that must be used with Equal Tire Balancer is too long for use with the extremely short valve stems. For these reasons, we believe most people are best served with the 1.25" length.

Land Rover Defender 90

The 1.25" length is our favorite length and the one we use on our personal vehicles. Here is John's Defender after he fitted new wheels and tires right before his Dusy-Ershim trip. The Dusy-Ershim is not a tremendously difficult trail, but it is very tight and cut tires and shredded valve stems are common on this trail.

The short 1.25" length leaves the valve stem tucked and less susceptible to damage. The wheels will take the damage instead of the valve stem.

Power Tank

If you air down when you hit the trail (and you should) or you need to repair a broken tire or valve, then you need to air up before hitting the road. You cannot rely on a gas station that might not be there or might have a broken air compressor. You need your own onboard air supply. While electric compressors work well enough, our favored method of airing up tires is with the Power Tank because of its great speed and its ability to run air tools in the field.

Having a powerful onboard air system on your vehicle means having the ability to do more than inflate your tires before hitting the road. Powerful onboard air also means having the ability to run air tools. Having the capability to power air tools on your vehicle is more necessary than most people think. No matter how careful you are, you will eventually break something on the trail. When you do break something, having air tools available will greatly facilitate repairs. Here, Axel Haakonsen lends the use of his Power Tank PT-15 to Sue and Neil Buchelt on their Moab 2003 trip. Sue's rear differential gave and they used the Power Tank to power a 1/2" impact wrench to remove the third member and replace the broken differential.

Snap-on Tools

One problem with air tools is that they require compressed air to run, which requires the fitment of air hoses. Without quickly detachable Couplers and Plugs, each air tool would require its own air hose to the compressed air source. This would be very costly and the tools would become almost unusable. Without a separate hose for each tool, the user would have to unthread the tool from the air hose and rethread another tool to change tools. This would quickly become burdensome and impracticable. All of these tools have been fitted with the Male-Threaded Industrial Interchange Plug and thus are compatible with all of our air hoses (which are all fitted with Six-Ball Couplers). It is very easy to swap tools back and forth using this system of fittings and connectors.

Quickly Detachable Fittings

With quickly detachable couplers and plugs, one can operate a multitude of different air tools from a single air hose if he so desires. Fitting air tools and air hoses with couplers and plugs enables one to attach and detach a particular air tool or air hose quickly and easily.

Plugs & Couplers

Here are the basic Plugs and Couplers one requires to make his air tools and air hoses quickly detachable. Left to right are shown the Male-Threaded Industrial Interchange Plug, Female-Threaded Industrial Interchange Plug, Male-Threaded Six-Ball Coupler, and Female-Threaded Six-Ball Coupler. All four fittings feature 1/4" NPT threads.

Power Tank Heavy-Duty Inflator

Almost all portable air tools like this Power Tank Heavy-Duty Inflator feature 1/4" NPT threads. This Heavy-Duty Inflator features female threads.

Male-Threaded Plug

The proper plug for the Heavy-Duty Inflator would feature a corresponding 1/4" NPT male thread, which this Plug does.

Plug Attachment

Attach the male-threaded Plug to the female-threaded Heavy-Duty Inflator. Use Teflon tape or liquid thread sealant to prevent air leaks.

Connectors Detached Connectors Engaged

Once the Plug is fitted to your air tool and a coupler is fitted to your air hose, you will be able to attach and detach your air tools quickly and easily.

Fitting a coupler to your air hose is just as easy. Simply thread the coupler onto your air hose with some Teflon tape or liquid thread sealer. This Power Tank Power Hose features a 1/4" NPT male thread, and thus takes the Female-Threaded Six-Ball Coupler.

Other air tools follow this same system. This Snap-On IM5100 1/2" Drive Impact Wrench has been fitted with a Male-Threaded Industrial Interchange Plug and is connected to the same Power Tank Power Hose that the Heavy-Duty Inflator was attached to.

One can even swap air hoses if he desires, so long as the air hose is fitted with the same Industrial Interchange Coupler. In the photo above, the same IM5100 impact wrench is fitted to a Snap-On air hose. Interchangeability is not a problem, so long as all of the plugs and couplers are the Industrial Interchange (Type 15) pattern.

Air Lines Coupled

Plugs and couplers can be used with more than air tools. We like to use several short lengths of air hose rather than one long air hose. The plug is free to rotate within the coupler, and thus the air hoses are much less likely to twist and become blocked. Fitting couplers and plugs to segments of air hoses also permits the fitment of various inline dryers and lubricators. Most dryers work best far from the compressor because the moisture trapped in the air has a chance to cool and condense better than when the air and moisture are hot. Inline lubricators work better close to the air tools, where the misty oil is more likely to reach the air tools. Fitting various lengths of air hose with couplers and plugs permits one to locate his dryers and lubricators where they are most effective.

Plugs

There are several different types of plugs and couplers in common use. We prefer to use the Industrial Interchange type, pictured above, because the Industrial Interchange pattern is by far the most common of the various patterns available. The Industrial Interchange pattern is also the pattern used by the manufacturers of the air-related products we sell.

Industrial Interchange

While all Industrial Interchange (Type 15) plugs are interchangeable, not all Industrial Interchange plugs are created equal. Many plugs like these Coilhose Pneumatics plug are made from mild steel and then plated to look like brass. After use, the brass coloration rubs off and the plug becomes unsightly. Steel plugs are also more likely to corrode than brass plugs are.

Female-Threaded Plug

We do not sell the Coilhose Pneumatics plugs. Our Plugs are from Amflo and are made from solid brass for resiliency and to resist corrosion.

Coilhose Pneumatics Industrial Interchange Ball Swivel Plugs

As an alternative to the fixed plugs shown above, we also offer the Coilhose Pneumatics Industrial Interchange Ball Swivel Plugs. These plugs are available in both female- and male-threaded versions to suit different applications.

The ball swivels on these plugs enable the plugs' nipples to swivel freely and also rotate, making your air tools easier to use in confined spaces.

Coilhose Pneumatics Six-Ball Couplers

Couplers differ even more than plugs. By far our favorite couplers are the six-ball type from Coilhose Pneumatics. We have used many different couplers and these are by far the finest we have used.

A key design feature of the Six-Ball Couplers is the six stainless steel balls. These six balls interface with the locking surfaces on the corresponding Industrial Interchange Plug and provide a more balanced and secure connection to the Plug. This enhanced lock extends the life of the Plug, even when used with percussion air tools and under high-vibration conditions. The balls and springs inside this Coupler are constructed from stainless steel rather than chromed carbon steel to resist corrosion.

Three-Ball Design Three-Ball Design

Other coupler designs feature three or four balls. These designs with fewer balls do not hold the Plug as securely and are more likely to leak than the Six-Ball Couplers. These designs also do not protect the Plug from wear and tear from percussion air tools like air hammers and impact wrenches.

No Balls

Some coupler designs do feature any balls and attempt to use Teflon seals to prevent air loss. These designs are usually the "universal" type that attempt to work with various plug configurations. These couplers do not hold the plug securely, often leak, and detach inadvertently. Avoid these designs.

Oversized Coupler

In addition to holding the Plug more securely than other designs, the Six-Ball Couplers are significantly smaller than other Industrial Interchange coupler designs.

Compare the Six-Ball Coupler to these other coupler designs. The Six-Ball Coupler is substantially shorter in length than the other designs that do hold the Plug as securely. The two "automatic" couplers on the right are also difficult to attach when they are under pressure.

The small size of the Six-Ball Couplers means you have smaller fittings on your air tools, making your air tools effectively smaller and easier to use in confined spaces.

The small size of the Six-Ball Couplers also comes into play when connecting different air hoses. The Six-Ball Couplers are small enough that they will easily fit through the mouths of all air hose reels.

Couplers

The Six-Ball Couplers feature a shoulder at the mouth that is the same diameter as the reciprocating locking sleeve. This helps to prevent accidental uncoupling when the Couplers are fitted to air hoses and dragged across the floor.

Plugs & Couplers - Coilhose

With both female and male threads available, these Plugs and Couplers can be fitted to various air tools and air hoses equally well without adapters. All of our Plugs and Couplers feature 1/4" NPT threads.

This Snap-On IM5100 1/2" Drive Impact Wrench is fitted with a Plug and Coupler. Note how the air hose wants to stay perpendicular to the impact wrench's body, even when the impact wrench is held so that the air hose should drop from the forces gravity. The length of the Plug and Coupler, combined with the inherent stiffness of the air hose, means that the user must contend with the additional length of the air hose as well as the size and weight of this impact wrench.

Fitting the Dynaswivel to the air tool changes things completely. No matter which way this Snap-On IM6100 1/2" Drive Impact Wrench is oriented, the air hose falls directly to the ground.

Here is a side-by-side comparison of the same two impact wrenches. The IM5100 on the left has a length of air hose that always wants to remain perpendicular the tool's body. The IM6100 on the right has a Dynaswivel fitted and there is no such problem with the identical air hose.

The same two impact wrenches await use in a utility cart. Note the orientation of the air hoses and how the Dynaswivel prevents side loads on the IM6100. Without a Dynaswivel fitted, these same side loads are borne by your wrists and arms, hastening fatigue and causing injuries like carpel tunnel syndrome.

Fitting the Dynaswivel makes the FAR7200 effectively six or seven inches shorter at a minimum, as well as reducing the side loads on one's forearms, wrists, and hands.

Free Air Hose

Fitting a Dynaswivel also means that you can keep your air tools handy with the handles up so that you can grab them as you need them. There is no need to lay the tool flat as is required with standard air hoses.

If you are rich or you just want your already-bulky air tools to be as compact as possible, you can fit each air tool with a Dynaswivel. In the photo above, the Dynaswivel's 1/4" NPT male thread has been fitted directly to the air input on the IM6100, and a Male-Threaded Industrial Interchange Plug has been fitted to the 1/4" NPT female threads on the Dynaswivel. A Female-Threaded Six-Ball Coupler connects the air hose to the Plug.

Doing so will make your air tools very compact. Note how this air hose is perpendicular to this IM6100's handle and how much space is saved. The tool is now effectively six or seven inches shorter in height than it would be with the air hose perpendicular to the tool's body.

For people who do not want to fit every one of their air tools with a Dynaswivel, it is possible to fit the Dynaswivel to the air hose before the Six-Ball Coupler and get most of the Dynaswivel's advantages with every tool. The Snap-On IM3100 Versadrive Impact Wrench shown above is not as compact as the IM6100 shown in the previous photo because of the added length of the Plug and Coupler, but it is still much more compact than when no Dynaswivel is fitted at all.

The Dynabrade Heavy-Duty Dynaswivel is identical to the Composite Dynaswivels pictured above, but is made out of aluminum instead of plastic. The Heavy-Duty Dynaswivel is much stronger than the Composite Dynaswivel.

Sometimes you have one exhaust when you actually need two. Solve that dilemma with the Coilhose Pneumatics Air Line Splitter. The Splitter creates two exhausts where only one previously existed, enabling the fitment of different air hoses, couplers, pressure switches, pop-off valves, etc. The Coilhose Pneumatics Air Line Splitter features solid-brass construction to resist corrosion. Or, let's say you want to add a Coupler to your ARB Air Compressor so that you can use it for emergency inflation of your tires. Your ARB Air Compressor has three outputs, two for the ARB Air Lockers and a third for the unit's pressure switch. By fitting the Splitter to the output for the pressure switch, it becomes possible pressurize to both the pressure switch and a Coupler for your air hose. It really is that simple.

Sometimes the Splitter isn't sufficient, because you need three outputs instead of two. Solve that dilemma with the Coilhose Pneumatics Air Line Cross. The Cross creates three exhausts where only one previously existed, enabling the fitment of different air hoses, couplers, pressure switches, pop-off valves, etc. The extra exhausts can be plugged with a Hex Head Plug if all three exhausts are not required for a particular application.

If you own air tools you know the importance of keeping these hardworking tools properly lubricated. Do you always lubricate your air tools before each use? If not, then install this Amflo Inline Lubricator somewhere close and upstream of your air tools and your air tools will always run at peak efficiency. The Inline Lubricator automatically lubricates your air tools with a measured amount of oil mist and prolongs the life of your air tools. We prefer the Inline Lubricator to wall-mounted units because wall-mounted lubricators are often mounted far away from the end of the air hose and may not properly lubricate tools due to run length of the air hose.

If you want to swap air tools, you can leave the Inline Lubricator attached to your air hose and change air tools at will. Amflo 125 PSI Safety Release Valve

If your compressed air system is powered by an air compressor, there is always the danger of damaging your air system by overpressurization. To prevent this dangerous mishap from occurring, most compressors are fitted with some sort of pop-off valve like this 125 PSI Safety Release Valve from Amflo. This safety valve automatically releases pressure at a calibrated 125 PSI. Fitting this safety valve somewhere on your onboard air system will ensure that your system will not build dangerous pressures.

Snap-on Air Compressor

Our Snap-On portable air compressor features a pressure switch that turns on the compressor when the contents of the air tank reach 115 PSI and shuts off the compressor at 150 PSI. If this pressure switch malfunctions, it is conceivable that the unit could keep on running and overpressurize the 30-gallon air tank to dangerously high levels. The result could be an exploding air tank. This would not be pretty.

Amflo 125 PSI Safety Release Valve

To prevent this potentially fatal mishap from occurring, our air compressor comes fitted with a 175 PSI Safety Release Valve. This unit automatically releases air at a controlled rate if the contents of the 30-gallon air tank reach 175 PSI.

The Amflo Safety Release Valve operates on the same principle and is designed for the same purpose, but this unit releases at 125 PSI rather than 175 PSI. We believe the 125 PSI figure is more in tune with the plethora of portable air compressors designed for onboard use like the ARB Air Compressor, which operate at pressures of approximately 100 PSI.
