The factory brake hoses are designed to be used with the factory suspension. If you have lifted your vehicle and are running a long-travel suspension system, then you should replace your factory brake hoses with longer brake hoses to prevent yanking on the brake hoses at full articulation.
Many trails have steep slopes that require heavy braking. This situation is made even worse when the vehicle is heavily loaded for long trips. Greater strain is placed on the factory brake hoses, which are made of rubber and deteriorate over time.
Unlike the factory rubber brake hoses, the Expeditionware DOT Brake Hoses are a four-layer design, with a spiral black plastic sleeve protecting the clear plastic layer against abrasion, the clear plastic layer protecting the braided stainless steel layer against the elements, and the braided stainless steel surrounding the Teflon inner core and protecting the core from bursting under high pressures.
Uncoated braided stainless steel is unprotected and can chafe against the frame or suspension pieces, causing degradation of the braiding and even possibly brake failure. Uncoated stainless steel also does not protect the Teflon inner core against road salts and the elements.
Here is a photo of a coated and uncoated stainless braided brake hose. The coating over the braiding adds an extra measure of protection to the stainless braiding, as well as protects the Teflon inner core against the elements.
The Expeditionware DOT Brake Hoses feature a fourth layer for additional protection.
A black plastic coil surrounds the other three layers and protect them against abrasion.
The Disco2's hoses are especially susceptible to chafing and abrasion from suspension components.
The end fittings are tightly and evenly crimped onto the stainless braided hoses, and then reinforced with a polymer sleeve that is crimped into place. The polymer sleeves feature raised ribs to hold the ends of the black plastic spirals.
The spirals may be locked in place if desired.
The clear plastic coating on the hose and the plastic reinforcements on the ends enable our Brake Hoses to meet DOT requirements. Our hoses are DOT approved and street legal.
Here is a close-up view of the male and female fittings on our Male and Female DOT Brake Hoses. All fittings are silver zinc plated for maximum corrosion resistance and then tightly crimped onto the braided stainless steel hose.
The Expeditionware Male and Female DOT Brake Hoses are drop-in replacements for the factory rubber brake hoses. All threads on the fittings match those of the factory Land Rover brake hoses. No adapter or other vehicle butchery is required for a proper installation of the Expeditionware DOT Brake Hoses.
The threads and fittings on the Disco2 DOT Brake Hoses match those of the factory Land Rover brake hoses.
A new mounting clip is included with the Disco2 DOT Brake Hose Kit.
One other of the Disco2 DOT Brake Hoses features a banjo fitting.
We include new fasteners and copper crush washers with every Disco2 DOT Brake Hose Kit.
The Disco2 DOT Front Brake Hose Kit even includes a rubber grommet that holds the brake hose in the factory bracket.
The brake hose is protected against abrasion from the bracket.
The Disco2 factory brake hoses come with yellow plastic clips to hold the ABS wires. Remove these clips from the factory hoses and fit them onto the Expeditionware DOT Brake Hoses.
In this manner, the factory set-up is maintained.
For a complete installation on the Disco2, fit the SlickRock Fabrication Disco2 ABS Extension Kit in addition to the Disco2 DOT Brake Hose Kits. The Disco2 DOT Brake Hoses are 3" longer than the factory brake hoses and the factory ABS wires run parallel to the DOT Brake Hoses. The ABS Extension Kit contains four extensions to extend the four ABS wires at all four corners of your Disco2 to match the length of the Disco2 DOT Brake Hoses. The ABS Extension Kit components are made by WABCO, the makers of the ABS system on the Disco2 and numerous other vehicles. The extensions are plug and play, and there is no vehicle butchery required to fit the extensions.
The Disco2 DOT Front Brake Hose is 23" long from tip to tip, roughly 3" longer than the Disco2's factory front brake hoses.
The Disco2 DOT Rear Brake Hose is 17.5" long from tip to tip, roughly 3" longer than the Disco2's factory rear brake hoses.
The Male DOT Brake Hose is longer than the D90 front brake hose and D90/Disco rear brake hoses. The Expeditionware DOT Male Hose is 21" long from tip to tip. The D90 front factory brake hose is 17.5" long and the D90/Disco rear factory brake hoses are 14" long. The Expeditionware DOT Male Hose replaces both of these factory hoses.
The Female DOT Brake Hose is longer than the factory rubber hose from the front of a Discovery Series I. The Female DOT Brake Hose is 21" long from tip to tip. The factory rubber brake hose is 16.5" long.
Here is the Brake Hose set-up for a Discovery Series I. The two Female Brake Hoses replace the factory front brake hoses and the two Male Brake Hoses replace the factory rear brake hoses. Total cost is only $120 to replace all four brake hoses.
All North American Specification Defenders, including the NAS Defender 110, take three Male Brake Hoses, two in the front and one in the rear.
The total cost to replace all three brake hoses is only $90.
Range Rover Classics are all over the place. The Classic was manufactured for 25 years, and there were numerous changes over years, including ABS and non-ABS. There are even different hose configurations within the same model year. If you are ordering brake hoses for your Classic, please double-check the type and number of brake hoses that are fitted to your vehicle before you order.
An ideal brake upgrade will include, in addition to the Expeditionware DOT Brake Hoses, the DBA Longlife Gold Brake Rotors.
For brake pads, we use and recommend only the Land Rover Genuine Parts Brake Pads. These rotors and pads in conjunction with the Expeditionware DOT Brake Hoses will take your brake performance to another level.
