Engel Transit Slide Locks
When transporting your Engel Freezer Fridge inside your vehicle, it should be secured. Avoid having to tie down your Engel by fitting a Transit Slide Lock to your cargo floor. Your Engel thereafter is quickly attachable and detachable from your cargo floor. Simply slide your Engel into position and it clicks in and locks down automatically. To remove just push the clip to release. The Transit Slide Locks are highly recommended from a safety point of view as they help prevent your Engel Freezer Fridge from shifting about in a vehicle or boat. The rear and sides of the Engel fridges are vented for airflow to the swingmotor, enabling operation in even confined spaces.
Here is a photo of the Engel 35. The Engel 35's volume capacity is 34 quarts, equivalent to 54 cans of soda. We recommend The Engel 35 to those who have height limitations, such as in open-top Defenders with tonneau covers or Discovery owners who want to retain the use of their sliding cargo covers. The Engel 35 holds more than two cases of sodas or beers, but is short enough that it can still be hidden under the factory cargo cover on the Discovery Series I or a tonneau cover on a Defender 90 Soft-Top.
The TwoZone Refrigerator Compartment increases the capacity of your Engel 35 and 45 Freezer Fridges, creates a partition for hard and soft contents, and creates two temperature zones. Installing the TwoZone will increase capacity an additional 21 liters, or 32, 12 oz. cans of soda. Lightweight items may be stored in the lower compartment and delicate items may be stored in the upper compartment. The TwoZone compartment will never be as cold as the lower compartment. When the Engel is set to refrigeration temperatures, the upper compartment will still remain cold, but not as cold. When the Engel is set to freezer temperatures, the upper compartment will be at refrigeration temperatures. Installing the TwoZone is very simple. Simply slide off your Engel's lid, slide on the TwoZone Refrigerator Compartment, and slide your Engel lid back on to your TwoZone. We generally recommend the Engel 45 over the 35, but if you absolutely must have a 35 then the TwoZone is available to increase the 35's smaller capacity on extended trips.
The cargo area of Ho's Discovery is usually filled with an Engel 45 and various Pelican Protector Cases. This shot is from the Fine Living Shoot, when Ho used the Engel 45 to supply cold drinks to the filming crew.
This Disco2 is fitted with an Engel 45 and Transit Slide Lock, which is bolted to a plywood floor, which in turn is secured to the factory tie-downs with ratchet straps. This is a very nice set-up because no drilling of the cargo floor is required to secure the Transit Slide Lock. The plywood floor is covered with black carpet to match the Land Rover Genuine Parts rubber cargo mat that when not offroading. Also secured to the plywood floor is a PT-15 Power Tank and Pelican 1610 Protector Case. The Transit Slide Lock obviates the need to secure the Engel 45 with a ratchet strap and access to the Engel 45's contents is not compromised in any manner. The factory 12 V plug in the cargo area is modified to remain always-on, so that the ignition does not have to be keyed for the Engel to receive 12 V power and operate.
The very clean set-up above was the inspiration for a similar set-up on this Disco2. The owner also used a plywood floor secured to the factory tie-downs, but used tan-colored carpet to match the factory carpet. Secured to the plywood floor is an Engel 45, Transit Slide Lock, and two Pelican 1610 Protector Cases. Also there but not visible in this photograph is the PT-10 Power Tank system. This is also a very nice set-up. Like the last truck, this truck features a hardwired factory 12 V plug in the cargo area so that ignition does not have to be engaged for the Engel to receive power.
The new Engel 40 Freezer Fridge differs from the previous 35 and 45 designs in several ways.
The Engel 40 features an ABS plastic body and lid. The plastic construction is designed for corrosion resistance in marine environments, lighter weight, and greater resistance to denting.
The four bottom corners are reinforced with bumpers.
The carry/transport handles are plastic as well.
The Engel 40's lid is locked closed with two latches rather than one.
The Engel 40's lid opens sideways and is reversible to suit different mounting locations.
The variable thermostat control is located on the side of the Engel 40 rather than on top.
The Engel 40 now comes standard with the inner basket,
but as you can see, the Engel 40 does not come standard with a green rubber floor pad like the Engel 35 and 45 models.
The old TwoZone Suspended Basket Set was designed for the TwoZone extension. This basket set worked in the Engel 35 and 45, but had to be tweaked slightly to fit.
The Engel Storage Basket is similar to the old TwoZone Suspended Basket Set but is designed specifically for the Engel 35 and 45 Freezer Fridges.
The Engel Storage Basket hangs suspended above the main basket and segregates and organizes the contents of your Freezer Fridge. Place your smaller food items in the Storage Basket so that you do not have to go digging for them inside your fridge.
The Storage Basket also protects delicate food items against damage. While two Storage Baskets will fit into the Engel 35 and 45, it is probably better to go with a single Storage Basket to facilitate access to the lower level of the fridge. The Storage Basket will slide back and forth easily to let you access the entire lower level.
The Hanging Storage Basket is ideal for the Engel 45, as you can still stack 12 oz. cans in two-can columns below the bottom of the suspended basket. Wasted space is minimized in the Engel 45. This is yet another reason why the Engel 45 remains preferred over the other Engel models.
The Engel 80 Freezer Fridge is the largest Engel unit currently available.
The Engel 80's volume capacity is 84 quarts, equivalent to a whopping 118 cans of soda. We use our Engel 80 primarily as a shop fridge for holding junk food. The Engel 80's capacity is large enough that there are two separate baskets.
Like the ARB 45 Freezer Fridge, the Engel 80 comes standard with an integral, digital thermometer.
With the Engel, there is no melting ice. Sandwich ingredients stay cold and fresh and dry.

This Range Rover Classic is fitted with an Engel 45, Transit Slide Lock, and Transit Bag. The owner has removed one of his rear passenger seats to make room for the Engel 45 and its appurtenances. Thus, he can access the Engel from the front seat (but not while driving of course) and his storage space in the cargo area is not compromised. This Engel 45 is hardwired to the battery and operates without the ignition keyed. This photo also shows the screen mesh on the portions of the Transit Bag that cover the vents for the unit's compressor. Fitment of the Transit Bag does not affect the unit's cooling.
Normally, the Engel should be strapped down to prevent a possible accident in a rollover or other collision. The ratchet straps used for this purpose work well enough, but are unsightly and relatively difficult to remove.
To obviate the need to strap down the fridge, Engel makes a Transit Slide Lock. Installing the Slide Lock is very easy.
The Slide Lock bolts securely and permanently to the floor.
The Slide Lock also comes with replacement feet for the fridge.
These feet have a waisted design,
that interlocks with the steel receptacles on the Slide Lock.
With the Slide Lock properly mounted, there is no need to strap down the fridge for regular use.

The lids on Engel 35 and 45 Freezer Fridges sometimes slide sideways and completely off the hinges. Usually this happens at the worst possible time. Secure the your Engel 35 or 45's lid against lateral movement with with the Engel 35/45 Hinge Lock.
The Hinge Lock is easily installed and still permits easy removal of the Engel 35 and 45's lid when desired. In the photo above, the lid is "locked" against lateral movement.
To release the lid, simply depress the Hinge Lock's button, which will make clearance for the lid's hinge to move laterally.
