Equal Tire Balancer

Equal Flexx is composed of dry granules that are placed into the tire cavity before the tire is mounted. Once inside the tire cavity, centrifugal force moves the Equal Flexx across the tread width and around the circumference of the tire, responding to force variations caused by irregularities within the tire, the road, and even the load. As the tires and wheels spin, Equal Flexx constantly repositions inside the tire as the load and speed change to maintain a stable footprint without vibrations.

The improvement over lead weights will be obvious the first time you get behind the wheel. You will feel less shimmy, bouncing, and vibration. The ride with Equal Flexx balancing your tires is smooth, comfortable, and stable. Even more important than a better ride is a better bottom line. Equal Flexx will save you money. Even wear means thousands of extra miles on each and every tire. Less shimmy means fewer alignments and fewer component and maintenance problems caused by vibration. And a one-time installation of Equal Flexx means you will never have to pay to re-balance the tire again. Still not convinced? Try it. Drive it for a day and you will immediately feel how well Equal Flexx works. Drive Equal Flexx for a while and you will see how dramatically Equal Flexx reduces tire wear. Just try Equal Flexx and you will never mount another tire without it.

Frequently Asked Questions About Equal Flexx Tire Balancer

What Is Equal Flexx?

Equal Flexx Tire Balancer

Equal Flexx is composed of different dry granules that reduce the vibration level of a loaded pneumatic tire in the dynamic mode, i.e., when the tire is rolling down the highway. The Equal Flexx granules are placed inside the tire and are free to move about the tire, constantly changing in location to accommodate various road and tire conditions.

What Causes Tire And Wheel Vibrations?

There are two primary causes of tire and wheel vibrations. The most widely known cause is imbalance caused by weight variations inside the tire and eccentricity of the tire's diameter. Some tire brands are obviously better than others in this regard. However, every tire--no matter how high the manufacturing quality--contains weight and dimensional variations.

The second, more technical, cause is radial and lateral force variation. Force variation is the result of tire/wheel, brake drum/rotor inconsistencies along with other rotating axle end components and variables in operating conditions that cause vibrations as the tire contacts the road surface under load. Radial and lateral force variations impact the footprint of the tire as it meets and leaves the road surface, eventually wearing down your tire. There are so many anomalies that cause force variation that it is inevitable. Even a brand new tire has irregularities that keep it from being uniform and balanced. Mount an imperfect tire on an imperfect wheel and the problems compound. Drive the imperfect tires and wheels on an imperfect road surface, and the problems are compounded further.

Even if a tire is perfectly balanced when it is new (and this is never true in reality), the wheel will go out of balance as it wears. Even the slightest amount of imbalance will exacerbate over time because the slightest amount of imbalance will cause the tire to bounce and vibrate as it turns and wear unevenly. In other words, the tire's imbalance will "snowball" as the tire is used more and more.

How Does Equal Flexx Work?

Equal Flexx has two effects in reducing force variation in the rotating tire/wheel assembly. First, it acts as a vibration damper, absorbing the unsteady vibration at all points on the tire circumference. Equal Flexx also acts as a force reducer in the footprint area, applying a force downward on the tire as it moves through the footprint.

Do I Use Lead Weights With Equal Flexx?

No. Equal Flexx is effective enough on its own that no other balancing system such as lead weights is required. If you are installing Equal Flexx on new tires when the tires are mounted, it is not necessary to balance the wheels and fit lead weights to the rims. If you are installing Equal Flexx on premounted tires, you may remove all of the lead weights on your wheels.

Why Is Equal Flexx More Economical Than Lead Weights?

Equal Flexx works for the life of the tire tread as opposed to having the tires rebalanced every 15,000 to 20,000 miles with lead weights--much less if you offroad frequently and lose chunks of tire on the trail.

What Are Equal Flexx's Other Advantages Over Lead Weights?

Equal Flexx Tire Balancer

Most large and heavy tires like those typically seen on 4x4 vehicles require lots of lead weights to balance. Even if these weights achieve a proper balance, they are unsightly.

Michelin XZL

Unless you have a very round, evenly weighted, and smooth tire like a Michelin XZL, you will likely require lots of lead weights to achieve a proper balance. Tires balanced with Equal Flexx require smaller amounts of Equal Flexx to achieve a superior balance. The reason for this is because Equal Flexx operates at the very periphery of the tire's diameter. Lead weights have to operate at the diameter of the rim, and thus cannot operate as efficiently as Equal Flexx does.

Equal Tire Balancer

A huge disadvantage of lead weights is that they are fixed while Equal Flexx is active to change to different tire conditions and wear. In the past, wheels were fitted with lead weights to counter the heavy areas of the tire and wheel. But spin balancing is performed without load force or weight on the tire and cannot offset the damaging effects caused by radial force variation. Any slight change to the tire (such as wear) and the tire is out of balance again. Unlike lead weights, Equal Flexx works continuously to keep your tires wearing evenly, under any load and at any speed. Even unexpected changes in your tire (such as losing countless little chunks of rubber on the trails) will not throw your tires out of balance when you install Equal Flexx.

Lead weights also tend to fall off on the trail, throwing the wheel out of balance. Equal Flexx does not fall out of the tire.

Equal Flexx Tire Balancer

It is very common to lose lead weights on the trail when your wheels rub against rocks. Trails like the Rubicon have lots of rocks and tight turns and are very hard against your wheels. The trail is literally strewn with lost wheel weights. With Equal Flexx, you do not have to worry about losing lead weights and driving home with unbalanced tires.

Scrub some tread or lose some chunks of tread on a difficult trail and then feel vibrations on the highway on your way home? This is fairly common for fourwheelers but this is not a problem with Equal Flexx. After doing difficult trails you will not have to get your tires rebalanced.

Mud packed in the treads or on the wheels after a trail run? After the Dusy Ershim, our wheels were clogged with mud after playing in the lake beds. However the highway drive home was perfectly smooth because the Equal Flexx was able to compensate for the new weight imperfections in the wheels.

These are some of the advantages of the active balance that Equal Flexx provides. Equal Flexx responds and adjusts automatically to keep you rolling smoothly. Equal Flexx will reduce or eliminate vibrations in a way that lead weights never have and never will. Equal Flexx adjusts across and around the inside of the tire. Top to bottom, side to side, Equal Flexx is constantly equalizing the tire forces on every tire, every revolution, every wheel position, every mile.

Equal Flexx is able to balance the total wheel assembly once for the full tread life of the tire. Equal Flexx equalizes imbalance constantly, regardless of changing "load forces" and other variables. Equal Flexx has the ability to adjust to any and all changes of vibration frequency or force variation. Lead weights are stationary on the rim and cannot adapt to changes such as tread wear, variations in radial force and load force. Equal Flexx helps prevent alternate lug wear, "cupping" and "flat spotting". Even tread wear patterns mean substantially more miles per tire.

Here is a photo of a 265/75 Mud-Terrain five weeks after replacing the lead weights with Equal Flexx. Note how even and smooth the tire wear is. Before installing the Equal Flexx, these tires needed frequent rebalancing and were showing signs of cupping on the lugs.

The 8.25 Michelin XZLs fitted to John's Defender also experienced balancing problems before John installed Equal. The Michelin XZLs are extremely heavy tires and the 8.25 size weighs over 70 lbs. per tire. This is an extremely heavy weight for such a relatively small tire. Even with the excellent build quality of all Michelin X tires, these tires were starting to cup from having lost their balance. After the lead weights were replaced with Equal, the wear is now perfectly smooth and uniform. And this superb balance will last the life of the tires.

In case you wonder what John did with his wheel weights, here they are. All of these lead weights are now in the garbage.

Is Equal Flexx A Miracle Worker Or Magic Substance?

No. Equal Flexx is not a mechanic in a bag. Equal Flexx cannot fix alignment problems. Equal Flexx cannot balance a tire that is out of round or has excessive run-out. Equal Flexx cannot balance a tire of such poor quality that such tire cannot be balanced using other means. If you have tried and tried to balance your existing tires and they still will not balance, purchase Equal Flexx with realistic expectations. Equal Flexx works very well but it is not a miracle worker. Equal Flexx has limits, just as lead weights do.

What Are The Results When Equal Flexx Is Tested On A Computer Spin-Balancing Machine?

Imbalance, because Equal Flexx only responds to load force/live load. A computer balancer cannot simulate load force. Do not worry. In actual driving conditions, the Equal Flexx granules will disperse throughout the tire and counteract the weight imbalances in the wheel and tire, and will balance the wheel better than any lead weight can.

Is It Necessary To Align My Truck's Tires If They Were Balanced With Equal Flexx?

Absolutely. Equal Flexx is not a substitute for wheel alignment and cannot cure handling irregularities and undue tire wear caused by improper alignment. Just as you would require a proper alignment when balancing your wheels with lead weights, you must align your wheels with Equal Flexx.

Can You Use Equal Flexx In Tube-Type Tires?

Yes, Equal Flexx is perfectly compatible with tube-type tires.

How is Equal Flexx Installed?

Equal Flexx Tire Balancer

The Drop In Bag can be dropped into a new tire before it is mounted. The Drop In Bag will break apart in approximately 5 to 10 miles and the Equal Flexx granules will distribute throughout the tire. The Drop In Bags are available in several different sizes to suit various tire sizes.

Can I Reuse Equal Flexx After A Flat Repair?

No, because of product loss. Equal Flexx adheres temporarily to the inside of the tire's tread by centrifugal force. A tire that has been punctured will permit the Equal Flexx granules to escape outside the tire. With an inadequate amount of Equal Flexx remaining inside the tire, the tire will not balance properly after it has been repaired. For this reason, a new supply of Equal Flexx must be inserted into the repaired tire.

If Water Is Inside A Tire, Does It Have Any Effect On Equal Flexx?

Equal Flexx does not absorb moisture in any manner. Water or moisture will not change its composition. Moisture that accumulates inside the tire will evaporate due to normal driving conditions and therefore is in contact with Equal Flexx for a very short time. Equal Flexx, when in contact with large amounts of water--to the point where it is actually floating in the pooled water--will do just that, float. This will interfere with the ability of Equal Flexx to optimize the given tire in the way that the tire dealer or fleet had intended when installing the product. Simply, this means that although Equal Flexx will never damage the tire in any way, if it is in contact with large amounts of water, it cannot perform its job. Again, it is important to reiterate, that in most cases, moisture will evaporate due to the heat build up in normal driving, and once the moisture has evaporated, Equal Flexx will perform as it originally did.

How Does Equal Flexx Differ From The Older Equal?

Equal Flexx and Equal Tire Balancer

The older Equal was a granular polymer that resembled fine sand. Equal Flexx is composed of several different granule sizes and compounds that are substantially larger in size. The new Equal Flexx compounds are designed for even greater vibration absorption than the old Equal (which worked superbly). IMI Products claims a 15% performance gain over the older Equal. Equal Flexx is also softer than the older Equal and will never damage the tire casing, wheel, or TPMS units or void any warranties.

Equal Flexx Tire Balancer

The older Equal came standard with an AirX Filtered Valve Core to prevent the granular Equal from clogging the seals of the valve core and causing air loss. Equal Flexx is large enough in size that it will not clog standard valve cores. Thus, no valve core is included with Equal Flexx.

Equal also came standard with a metal sealing valve cap to act safeguard against air loss in case the AirX Filtered Valve Core did become clogged with Equal. Equal Flexx does not come with any valve caps because standard valve caps are sufficient.
