Tool box organization is very important. Not only is an organized array of tools a pleasure to use, but the tools are easy to find and thus easier to use. The Ernst Manufacturing tool organizers are the best way that we have found to organize our shop tool box.
The Blue Socket Organizers are 18" long and are available with 1/4", 3/8", or 1/2" Twist Lock Socket Clips. The Socket rails are identical, with only the Socket Clips being of different size. Each Blue Socket Organizer comes with 15 Socket Clips, but Socket Clips may be added or removed.
Similarly, the Red Socket Organizers are 18" long and are available with 1/4", 3/8", or 1/2" Socket Clips. Just as with the Blue Socket Organizers, the Red Socket Organizers come with 15 Socket Clips each, and Socket Clips may be added or removed.
The sides of the Socket Organizer are serrated to prevent undesired movement of the Socket Clips on the Organizer. The Socket Clips are easily repositioned to suit different preferences and tool sizes, and can be inserted between previously already-placed Socket Clips. Individual Socket Clips may also be removed without disassembling the entire Socket Organizer. Socket Clips of different drive sizes may be fitted to the same Socket Organizer. The Socket Clips are held securely enough to the rail that a loaded Socket Organizer may be hung vertically without the Socket Clips sliding to the bottom. A slotted hole on the end of the rail permits hanging if desired.
A major advance on the new Ernst Socket Organizers is the Twist Lock Socket Clip.
The older design from Ernst was a square plastic anvil that used spring pressure to retain the socket in place. The amount of spring pressure was designed so that it was sufficient to hold a socket in place, but not so strong that one had to hold down the rail and pull on the individual socket very hard to remove it from the rail. This system worked well enough, but it made the previous Socket Organizers suitable only for tool box use and not for field transport because the sockets would fall out of the socket clips and collect at the bottom of the tool bag.
The new Twist Lock Socket Clip enables the user to lock the socket onto the rail if he desires. The Twist Lock Socket Clips are eminently suitable for field tool use as well for the tool box.
In the photo above, the sockets are merely sitting on the Twist Lock Socket Clips and are held by gravity alone. When the Socket Organizers are in the tool box, it is very easy to put the sockets onto the rail. It is just as easy to remove a socket to use it. There is no need to hold down the rail to remove a socket.
Turning the socket 45 degrees will lock it onto the Twist Lock Socket Clip and hold it very securely. If you are the type who wants all of his sockets locked onto the rail at all times, you can lock them all. Twisting them and pulling them away from the rail sounds complicated, but it is very intuitive and much easier than holding down the rail with the heel of your hand and pulling an individual socket from the rail. For our own tool box use, we just like to leave all of the sockets loose. For our field tool sets, we lock the sockets in place so that they stay on the rail during rough transport.
As with the old Socket Clips, the new Twist Lock Socket Clips all fit the same rail regardless of drive size. If you like, you can mix and match different drive sizes on a single rail. Generally, we like to keep drive sizes separate in our shop tool set for organization, but mix and match different drive sizes in our field tool sets to minimize wasted space and make the field set as small as possible.
The latest 8400 series of Ernst Manufacturing rails that we sell come with magnets on the underside of the rails. These magnets greatly increase the utility of the Socket Organizers.
The magnets are strong enough that these 1/2" drive sockets are suspended against gravity. And yet the Socket Organizer is easily peeled away from the steel surface if desired. The magnets are not that strong. They're just strong enough.
The magnetic rails secure the Socket Organizers to your tool box's drawers. Opening and closing the drawers does not cause the Socket Organizers to shift. The rubber liner of the drawers is also held stationary and centered on the drawer. There is no longer a need to remove the Socket Organizers from the drawer and reset the rubber liner periodically.
If you are the type who likes to lock the sockets onto the Socket Organizer, you can also stick the Socket Organizer onto various steel surfaces like a roll cart whenever you work under your vehicle. To release a socket, simply twist and it will fall away.
For field tool sets, the magnetic rails let you stick the Socket Organizers to your vehicle's underbody for easy access during repairs. The sockets stay organized and out of the dirt.
How you organize your tools is really up to you. The Socket Organizers are available in blue and red to differentiate between SAE and metric sizes. We like to use the red color to designate SAE and the blue for metric. There is, however, no absolute rule for tool organization. Of course you are free to have all of your Socket Organizers the same color or use blue for SAE. The different colors are intended only as patently visible identification aids for users who like color differentiation.
Some like their Socket Organizers to be chock full, with all of the sockets touching one another. Some prefer this set-up so that they can grab as many different sockets as possible on a single rail and minimize used space in the tool box. Others prefer to have the sockets separated slightly so that they are easier to grab. Whether you like your sockets to be spaced closed together or far apart, the indexable nature of the Socket Clips and Socket Organizer let you employ whatever method you like.
Included with each Socket Organizer is a sheet containing 96 identification decals.
The identification decals make a meaningful difference. In crowded tool boxes, the decals make finding a particular tool much easier.
Quality sockets are always marked with their size to make identification easier. Some companies like Snap-on go one step further and mark their SAE sockets with grooves and its metric sockets with knurling for even easier identification. These markings definitely help but they are not as visible as the markings on the identification decals.
For example, the identification decals are much more legible than the engravings on these 1/4" sockets and crowfoot wrenches.
Furthermore, the size markings on sockets often get lost as the socket is turned or located improperly on the socket rail. The size markings are not timed and the sockets can easily be put onto the rails so that their size markings no longer are visible. In contrast, the identification decals do not move.
The identification decals also provide patent identification of missing tools. In the photo above, the it is patently obvious that the 15/16" socket is missing. If this individual Socket Clip were empty but unmarked, the exact missing tool would not be known so easily.
The decal set is very complete and will satisfy the vast majority of tool sets. Each decal sheet contains labels for metric sizes from 2mm to 36mm, Torx sizes from T6 to T60, SAE sizes from 1/16" to 1 9/16", and screwdriver sizes from #0 to #5. Common SAE sizes such as 1/4", 5/16", 3/8", and 1/2" are thoughtfully included more than once to make the decal sheet more useful.
This metric 1/4" drive set is easily accommodated by the Blue Socket Organizer and the identification decal set. The decals show where each particular tool belongs on the Organizer. The identification decals are complete enough that is unusual to have a particular tool that cannot be identified with a particular decal.
Our 1/2" drive sockets go all the way to 32mm in size, which is quite large. However, the identification decals go all the way to 36mm and easily accommodate our largest metric sockets.
The 1 1/16" impact sockets for the Land Rover lug nuts are easily accommodated as well, as the SAE identification decals go all the way up the 1 9/16".
It is very common to require multiple 1/4" decals for a particular 1/4" drive set. From left to right are shown a 1/4" extension, 1/4" swivel, 1/4" short extension, 1/4" magnetic swivel bit holder, and 1/4" magnetic bit holder. These are common items in most tool boxes. The Ernst decal sheets thoughtfully recognize and accommodate these needs.
3/8" is another very common size, as tool sets commonly have several 3/8" pieces in them. Shown left to right are 3/8" impact swivel, 3/8" swivel, 3/8" extension, and 3/8" stubby extension.
Add 3/8" sockets and you will require even more 3/8" decals. This is why the identification decals thoughtfully come with extra 3/8" decals.
All Torx sizes from T16 to T60 are included in the identification decal sheet.
Every tool box contains some specialty tools. Of course no decal set could ever be complete enough to designate every single type of tool. There is Metric, SAE, Phillips, Pozidriv, Slotted, Torx, Tamper-Resistant Torx, Torx Plus, Male Torx, SAE Allen, Metric Allen, Weatherhead, British Standard, Pentagonal, Double Square, Triple Square, High Performance/Spline, etc. It goes on and on. However, the identification decal sheet covers a lot more of the specialty tools than one might imagine. For example, even the oddball #4, #3, #2, and #1 tap sockets may be identified using the supplied identification decals. These particular decals may also be used to identify screwdriver sockets like Pozidriv #4.
Even very large sockets such as this 2" socket for the Great Basin Rovers drive flange cap can be marked with the "2" decal that would otherwise be used for 2mm or #2 tools.
There are some tools in our box for which we have had to improvise on the identification decals. The 2 1/16" Land Rover hub nut socket is an oddball size. We used a "1/16" decal for this tool.
For the E10 Female Torx socket, we use a "10" label that is intended for use with a 10mm socket. When a particular decal does not exist for your particular tool, use your imagination and many workable solutions will occur to you.
The Socket Organizers are 18" long and can hold a high number of sockets. The Socket Organizer pictured above holds 21 different 3/8" drive sockets. However, each Socket Organizer comes standard with 15 Twist Lock Socket Clips.
If you require more socket clips or if you want to upgrade your older Ernst socket rails to the new Twist Lock Socket Clips, the Twist Lock Socket Clips are available in 1/4", 3/8", and 1/2" sizes. Each pack of Twist Lock Socket Clips includes 15 Twist Lock Socket Clips and one sheet of identification decals.
Also available is the Side Mount Ratchet & Extension Holder, which we prefer over the face-mounted version because the side-mounted type leaves the Socket Organizer open for holding sockets, crowfoot wrenches, screwdriver bits, and so on. The Side Mount Ratchet & Extension Holder mounts to the bottom serrations of the Socket Organizer. Just like the Socket Clips, the Ratchet & Extension Holders are held securely in place by the serrations and do not slide around annoyingly.
The Side Mount Ratchet & Extension Holders are some of the handiest organizers we have in our tool box. Above is shown one of our 1/2" drive Socket Organizers. Three different Side Mount Ratchet & Extension Holders are mounted to this Socket Organizer. Why the red SAE Socket Organizer and not the blue metric Socket Organizer? Ratchets and extensions are really neither SAE nor metric, but it made sense to us to have these implements on the red SAE Socket organizers since they are 1/2" drive size and not 12.7mm drive size. Apparently, Snap-on concurs, as its 1/2" drive ratchets and extensions are grooved rather than knurled.
The Holder on the left side of the rail holds a 1/2" drive locking flex ratchet.
The two Holders on the right side of the rail hold four different 1/2" drive extensions of differing lengths. Even the longest 1/2" drive extensions are securely held by the Holder and do not wiggle loose. Holding the shorter 1/2" drive extensions is child's play for the Holder.
The fifth extension is short enough to be placed on the Socket Organizer and held by a Socket Clip. The short extension is short enough that it can be oriented vertically without interfering with drawer movement.
This Socket Organizer with its appurtenances sits inside a crowded tool box drawer yet everything is in its place and easy to find. The entire Socket Organizer is also easy to remove from the drawer, put on one of our roll carts, and taken to the work area. Even in our crowded tool box drawer, the 1/2" drive extensions are held neatly in their place and easily within reach. The extensions are always in the box in the same place, so they are accessed quickly and easily. If an extension is missing because it was left on a customer's vehicle by mistake, it is immediately apparent. If the ratchet and extensions were loose, this type of organization would be impossible.
We've tried loose ratchets and extensions before; it didn't work. This is a photo of our socket drawer from a few years ago. Hardly disorganized, but nothing close to what is possible with the Ernst tool organizers and especially the Side Mount Ratchet & Extension Holders.
Here is the same drawer today, after the Ernst treatment. Our drawer holds more than three times as many tools in the same space now, and yet the tools are much easier to find and organize than they ever were before the Ernst treatment.
For ratchets with a bend like this speeder ratchet, you can space apart the Side Mount Holders so that they intrude into the bent portion of the handle and orient the tool vertically.
The Side Mount Ratchet & Extension Holder's benefits apply especially well to the 1/4" drive size because of screwdriver shanks as well as 1/4" drive extensions.
This Holder secures a 1/4" drive ratchet and flexible extension. The Holder is affixed to our 1/4" drive Socket Organizer, which holds our SAE 1/4" sockets.
Just as with our 1/2" and 3/8" drive sets, we also have 1/4" drive extensions. These extensions are secured in place with Side Mount Ratchet & Extension Holders.
The 1/4" drive Holders also hold our screwdriver shanks.
Ernst Manufacturing does not currently make a bit holder. To organize our bits, we use the Ullman Devices Bit Holder and MegaMAG Socket Rack.
The Ullman Devices Bit Holders hold our Torx, Allen, Pozidriv, Phillips, and slotted bits and keep them organized. Even the 5/16" drive Torx bits will squeeze into the Ullman Bit Holders.
The Ullman Devices Bit Holder is molded from a sturdy, unbreakable vinyl and holds up to 21, 1/4" hex bits. The Bit Holder keeps bits neat and organized. The Bit Holder is only 3.5" long and is ideal for field tool sets. While the Bit Holder is eminently suitable for field tool sets, the Bit Holder is just as suitable for the tool box.
The Ullman Devices MegaMAG Socket Rack features neodymium magnets that hold the Bit Holders onto the rail.
The MegaMAG Socket Rack will adhere to ferrous surfaces. The rail's underside is coated with black vinyl to prevent scratches to painted surfaces.
The MegaMAG Socket Rack fits into our shop box with the Ernst Socket Organizers.
If you do not employ the Side Mount Ratchet & Extension Holders, four different Socket Organizers can be held together with the Socket Organizer Mounting Kit. This three-piece kit securely holds and organizes four Socket Organizers and permits them to be mounted horizontally or vertically.
Here are four different Blue Socket Organizers being held by the Socket Organizer Mounting Kit. If you like, you can employ the Side Mount Ratchet & Extension Holders on the two outer Socket Organizers. The Ernst System is designed so that all of the different pieces work together.
The slotted hang holes in each Socket Organizer dovetail with the mounting pegs on the Socket Organizer Mounting Kit.
The other end of the Socket Organizers is held securely in place. Teeth on the Socket Organizer Mounting Kit mate with the serrated teeth on the Socket Organizers and hold them securely in place. Yet the Socket Organizers are instantly and easily detachable if desired.
The middle piece of the Socket Organizer Mounting Kit supports the middle of the Socket Organizers and prevents them from bowing under load.

The 15 Tool Gripper Wrench Organizers come in four different configurations: (1) Black Gripper; (2) Black Reverse Gripper; (3) Red Gripper; and (4) Red Reverse Gripper.
The Wrench Organizers are called "Gripper" because they are manufactured from a pliable polymer and have small "hooks" that grip the wrenches and prevent them from slipping.
Do not confuse the Gripper Wrench Organizers with other, hard plastic wrench racks on the market. These hard plastic racks are brittle and easily break. Our old wrench racks are now in the garbage. The pliable polymer material of the Gripper racks does not break, and is impervious to solvents and other shop fluids.
The polymer hooks press against the wrenches and hold them securely in place, yet the wrenches are easily removed when you want. Just the right amount of tension is used on the Gripper Organizers. The wrenches are not held so tightly that they must be pulled hard from the rack.
The hook profile is thoughtfully designed so that a wrench can be laid inside the Wrench Organizer without engaging the hooks. A wrench laid down in this fashion will sit proud, above the rest of the wrenches. Thus a wrench that is commonly used in a work area can be left in this fashion so that it will be more easily found when it is needed again.
The Wrench Organizers are available in both standard and reverse configurations so as to maximize storage space inside a wrench drawer.
Wrenches get longer as they get large in fastener size. Having one standard and one reverse rack inside a drawer permits two different wrench sets to fit inside. We like to fit our SAE wrenches in the Red Wrench Organizer and our metric wrenches in the Black Wrench Organizer. This way, the SAE and metric wrenches are kept segregated and their type is patently visible, even at a glance. Note how the size markings on all of the wrenches face the user. This is why it is not desirable to take a standard Wrench Organizer and face it backward. With both standard and reverse wrench racks employed, more wrenches can fit into a single drawer and all of the wrenches are oriented properly.
Also available are the 11 Tool Stubby Gripper Wrench Organizers. These organizers feature the same Gripper soft construction and hook profile. The Stubby Wrench Organizers accommodate stubby and midget wrenches that are too short to be stored inside standard wrench racks. The polymer material of the Gripper Organizers may be cut easily and the rack shortened if you desire.
Every Wrench Organizer regardless of color or size features a carry handle that folds to afford more storage room in tight tool box drawers. The handle is strong enough to permit a fully loaded Wrench Organizer to be hung from a wall if desired.
