Rides

Sorry for the late notice, but a few of us are going riding early tomorrow morning. You local guys are welcome to join us if you like.

Here's the planned route:

http://www.mapmyride.com/routes/view/42687614/

You can see the route is 35 miles long there are three category 67 climbs on that route. It's a beautiful route with majestic ocean views and some really nice houses here and there.

The plan is to leave the EE shop tomorrow morning at around 5:30 a.m. and then ride before opening tomorrow at the usual 9:00 a.m.

If anyone wants to join in on the fun tomorrow morning, let me know.

I'll try to give you guys more notice before the next group ride.

I need shoes.

Thanks to Ho, Han, and Aaron for today's ride.

I snapped only one pic today:

hochung July 23rd, 2011 08:06 PM

It sure was fun. it was tough, but fun.

After most of the ride was done, with maybe 4 or 5 miles to the shop, we stopped for some drinks.

Han was ahead of us, you can see him wearing a white top by John's right shoulder:

We should do this more often. I'll try taking more pics as I build some strength to keep up with the guys.

It was a fun morning for sure. Thanks to John, Ho and Han!

I didn't get any photos of Han, I was too stunned by these sights:

These cell phone cameras are really handy.

I don't think I have even one pic of rides from my high school days. There were no cell phones back then and we never carried cameras either. The only pics I have are some racing pics that some others took.

I like this pic:

You can see the tremendous size difference between Aaron and me. Even our rear tires look different in size for some reason. It's probably the color of the tires and rims, but then again even the shadow cast by Aaron's rear wheel looks longer. It's weird.

I did not know you were friends with the Dalai Lama, John.

Anyone up for riding this Saturday morning starting at 6:00 a.m.?

I mapped this proposed route:

http://www.mapmyride.com/routes/view...pen_ive_done=1

You can see the distance and elevation marked out.

Alternatively, we might try something like this:

http://www.mapmyride.com/routes/view...pen_ive_done=1

This one is slightly longer but the climbing may be easier or hard; I don't know.

I haven't done either of these rides yet. They're a lot harder than the rides I've been doing in the few weeks I've been back on the bike. But they could be fun. These are more for illustration than anything. I'm not into mapping routes and then following them strictly.

Let me know if anyone's interested. I can't do this Sunday because the August CaPRC match is this Sunday.

John, your rides are only visible to your mapmyride friends. In "my rides" section you will see a list of all the rides you mapped or rode and next to the miles column there is a column w/ lock icons, click on the locks to allow public viewing of that one ride.

I can't do it this Saturday. Have fun!

johnlee August 11th, 2011 12:16 PM

Shit.

I think they're all unlocked now.

PV loop clockwise

This morning, John and I did the PV loop again, but this time, clockwise.

on my way to meeting John, descending Via Del Monte:

and waiting for John at the Malaga Cove Plaza:

descending PV Drive East:

and keeping up with the blue jersey guy:

I need to figure out a way of clamping my iphone to the handlebar. I would have more pics then.

johnlee August 20th, 2011 02:28 PM

Note the cap. Something funny happened to me on the way to meet Ho this morning.

A woman in front of me was wearing a Velo Club La Grange jersey. That's my old club. So when I caught up to her I wanted to see how the club was doing. Our conversation was:

Quote:

John: "Good morning."
Woman: "Good morning."
John: "Are you still a member of Velo Club La Grange?"
Woman: "I shouldn't be talking to you; you're not wearing a helmet."
John: "Really."
Woman: "Yes. I've known several riders who were killed because they weren't wearing a helmet."

I just rode away.

JSQ August 20th, 2011 08:45 PM

Unfuckingbelievable.

Did she think she was going to contract a TBI just from riding next to you?

johnlee August 20th, 2011 09:14 PM

Here's my theory on helmets and helmet wearers. Riders who wear helmets hate riders who don't wear helmets because:

(1) The helmet wearers know deep down inside that they look like freds. This is especially so when they see you not wearing a helmet and they're reminded of how freddish they look. This upsets them.

(2) The helmet wearers ride in fear. They don't like the fact that they're afraid and you're not.

I'm always amused by the fact that the helmet wearers are vehemently in favor of mandatory helmet laws. These people already wear their own helmets. Such a law wouldn't even affect them. At most they should be indifferent toward such laws. And yet they're vehemently in favor of them. It's almost their religion.

Really, do you think the helmet wearers care that much about our welfare? They don't even like us.

As with most things, there's a purported reason and a real reason for why people do what they do.

nosivad_bor August 21st, 2011 07:12 AM

I used to think helmets were stupid too and then I grew up. I respect my friends and family so I wear a helmet to reduce the likelihood that they will have to take care of a brand damaged version of myself from an accident. That's the biggest motivator for me.

There are other reasons too.

JSQ August 21st, 2011 10:38 AM

I don't buy your theory.
I've always worn a helmet and I don't care who else does.

I think this woman is like Rob. She's special. She cares A LOT.
