I'm with Han on this one.

I think the 90s were the dark days of cycling. The cool road shops like Ernie's Pro Bikes were selling mountain bikes to stay in business. Mountain biking got big. Shimano had eclipsed Campagnolo. Dayglo colors became hot. Doggie-style pedaling became the norm. The hour record was in shambles. Helmets were everywhere. It was a disaster.

Even the Eddy Merckx factory was turning out hideous paint jobs:
