Renting Land Rovers in South Africa?

Hi All,
A friend of mine and her boyfriend are planning a vacation for next year in Botswana, Namibia and South Africa. They want to rent a Land Rover and tour the countryside on their own, if possible, as opposed to being driven around by others.

Has anyone rented rovers (of any model) in South Africa? Anyone have recommended points of contact or any pointers / recommendations in general for someone contemplating a trip like this?

Many thanks for any help,

Sure, done that

I rented for around 6 weeks from Kwenda Safari:

I would avoid them. When we returned, they charged us to replace ALL the tires on the 4 vehicles we rented, as well as for nicks and scratches on the undercarriage! Someone ran into us in Windhoek (Namibia), and the authorities placed all the blame on us, despite the fact that the other person was driving on the wrong side of the road! And Kwenda did nothing to fight for our cause. Some 6 months later, they came back demanding $2000 in damages. One of the other Land Rovers was in very poor repair. During our 6 weeks/5k miles trip, this truck had the following failures:

-Power steering pump failed (we had to pour motor oil into it to keep it from seizing)
-Transmission failure
-Wiring harness pulled from car when alarm system loom (which was zip tied to the factory harness) got caught on some tough brush.
-Battery switch failure (which caused us all kinds of trouble until we figured out that it was the switch itself)
-General poor repair.
-None of the vehicles had proper tool kits

Trouble is that Kwenda is just a small-time 1-man operation with very little working capital.

Were I to do that again, I would rent from a larger company that won't screw you for every dime and provide decent vehicles. Try Britz:

Only downside with Britz is that thier vehicles have logos on the doors, so it ruins all your photos, and whenever you pull into a town, everyone knows your a tourist.

Let me know how you fare!

Thanks, Jim - I'll pass that advice on - knowing what *not* to do is often as good as knowing what to do!
