THE TWO TOUR DE FRANCE CANDIDATES

ANDRE LEDUCQ (Fr.): "The fine Parisien has refound his good mood on the road to Valognes, in the second stage."

This is a very sad day for me.

About 8 miles into the planned 60 mile ride I felt a really weird head shake. It felt like my bars were loose. I stopped checked it out.... nothing. Rode a bit more... nope something is definitely wrong. Axle? Stem? Headset? Hmmmm....

Oh shit. Found the problem.

Only on one side of the head tube, so I should be able to limp back to the truck. It is a shitty photo... and yet, something about it I kind of like. Maybe it is just out of sadness.

By the time I arrived at the truck the bike was wobbling all over the place. Another inspection and there is only about 1/2 inch of metal still connecting the head tube and top tube.

I have been all over on this bike in NorCal, SoCal, OR, WA, MA, VT, ME and probably more that I am forgetting. I have done everything from racing cyclocross to touring with a trailer on it. I raced cyclocross on this bike the morning of my wedding with family watching. This bike has surprised more than a few roadies with how well it can keep up and has spent plenty of time at or near the front of a pace line, even with knobbies. It has also shown plenty of scornful Mtn bikers a thing or two, even on technical single track. I have crashed this bike countless times... Low sides, over backwards, over the bars, into trees and rocks...

Edit: Gabrielle just reminded me that we bought both her Salsa and mine at the same time. It was her first road bike and my first Cyclocross bike. We received the frames to our specs (hers red and mine clear) and I put them together in '95.

*sigh* This is a very sad day indeed.

Just TIG weld it back up if you really don't want to let it go.

It can easily be made strong enough.

Glory days of the Renault-Elf-Gitane squad:

I can't remember their exact exploits in 1984, but they did win 10 stages, the yellow jersey (Fignon), and the white jersey (Lemond). They had two men on the podium in Paris. They also won the team time trial if I recall. They won the team classification. I think Vincent Barteau won the yellow jersey on stage three and the team wore it into Paris. The team also started the Tour with Fignon in the French Tricolor and Lemond in the rainbow jersey.

Directeur Sportif Cyrille Guimard was a fine rider in his day:

What a crack-up. I'm always surprised by how so many climbers can't descend. You would think they would get plenty of practice during their training rides in the mountains.

Yes it is, though very different tubing. I am still wrapping my head around the 29er thing. The geometry just feels so odd. Each ride feels a bit better though and over all I like it.

I just checked the Salsa site. Your frame is called the El Mariachi and it has Kung Fu steel tubes? That's awesome.

Congrats on your new ride.

Thanks John. I added bar ends even though they are not trendy any more. And just to be sure there was enough added funk, I installed my old and most favorite Anza bar ends. I am starting to get a feel for the bike, it is somewhere between the speed of a "Cross bike and the traction/comfort of a Mtn Bike.
