LR winch tray mod

So, tired of the terrible approach angle created by the stock LR winch tray, I decided to do something about it. I had a shop fabricate new plates which attach to the frame with mounting holes that raise the winch tray about 4 inches. To accomodate frame of the winch tray, two slots were cut in the plastic bumper. Result, a stock look with an approach angle similar to a stock rig with an SD bumper. Here is a before and after pic.

There is a bracket on the crush cans that provide structural support for the bumper. This bracket prevented raising the tray supports and required a small notch out of it as well as the bumper. The bumper is still well supported as only a small notch was taken out and the bumper is supported in other places as well as the crush can bracket. The actual crush cans were unaltered, the only real change was done on the brackets connecting the winch tray to the crush cans.

It turned out exactly like I had hoped, no alteration the truck itself other than two small notches in the SD bumper (which already had some damage to it, so this was my test run bumper).

I have not installed a LR winch basket before, but... the winch basket is attached to the bumper crush cans?

crush can only holds the bumper blade portion. the winch basket is attached directly to the frame.

but modifying as rob described, i'd imagine the crush cans would be on the way... but, now it's all clear.

Aaron,
sorry if that was confusing. The winch tray is attached to the frame. The bumper is attached to the crush cans by a bracket coming off of the crush cans. To raise the winch tray, I had to cut a notch in the bracket on the crush can.

"but... the winch basket is attached to the bumper crush cans? "

LOL, yeah, that would not work so well.

Here is better pic.

#1 points to the notch cut in the bumper shell.

#2 points to the notch cut in the crush can bracket. Also, this is the black bracket holding the winch tray to the frame that was modified.

That's great! One of the things I do not like about my TJM bumper is that the winch sits very low.

Sorry Peter, I re-used the orginal brackets by reversing them.

I have winched several times since this mod and have had no problems yet. Probably the favorite mod I have done...low impact and the winch tray doesn't act like a shovel anymore.
