Rear Main Leak on a Defender 90

Like most V8 Defender owners I have oil leaking from the rear main seal. I heard that it is possible to replace the "cross seals" to resolve this leak by removing the sump (the factory manual says you must remove the transmission) and tehn removing the rear main bearing cap on the crank. Can anybody confirm this... ?

You can replace the cross seals by removing the oil pan and unbolting the rear main cap. No trans removal. You may want to clean the area with 2+2 or the like first and see where the source of the leak is first. Sometimes it's the cross seals, sometimes the rear main, sometimes both. Usually the rear main in my experience and while you're there do the cross seals. It's no more or less work after removing the trans while doing the rear main. But check it out first. When you replace the cross seals, make sure you get the updated set.

Mike,

Sorry I have just seen your post. How do I know if I have the latest update cross seals?

Thanks,

Paul
