Youth Shotguns

With all the talk of shotguns and advice thought I'd ask for help on an issue I've been thinking about.

My 8 and 12 year-olds are attending weekend youth shotgun clinics and seem to enjoy learning and shooting. So far they've been using a .410 and 20 ga. at the clinics and I'm contemplating buying them their own.

My older daughter is set on a short stock Benelli Montefeltro 20 ga. even though I tried to steer her towards the Beretta AL391 Youth. One thing I like about the Benelli is the replaceability of the short stock with regular size to allow her to keep using as she grows.

For the 8 year-old and the .410 it looks like the cheap single shot H&R New England Youth gun is the only thing I've seen. That's what she is using at the clinics as well.

Any suggestions? Ho? Keith?

Of course, Jack, I could get the set of side-by-side Purdey's and a saw...

Greg, that's sweet that you're taking your daughters shooting. Good job. Before you know it, you'll have a Kim Rhode on your hands.

If your daughter is discriminating enough to prefer the Benelli to the Beretta, I wouldn't try to fight it. After she outgrows the Montefeltro, you could easily restock it for her or keep it for yourself.

LOL-I wouldn't say she's discriminating, rather she's seen and tried the Benelli and not the Beretta.

One reason I prefer the Benelli over the Beretta is that the Super 90 cycles so much faster. The Beretta isn't a slow cycler, but it is slow compared to the Super 90. When you shoot the Super 90 for a while and then go to the Beretta, you can actually feel the delay in cycling. The difference is slight but it's there. It's sort of like shooting the P7 for a while and then switching to a short-recoil pistol. You can definitely feel the time lag after you get accustomed to the faster-cycling weapon.

Winchester mod. 42?

that's a great .410

although as a purist I vastly prefer 28 bore to .410.
