Wilderness First Aid Class

I signed for a two-day Wilderness First Aid (WFA) course with Adventure Risk Management:

http://www.adventureriskmanagement.com/

I signed up for the August 4-5, 2007 class in Orange County.

Here's the 2007 schedule:

http://www.adventureriskmanagement.c.../crsesche.html

Is anybody else interesting in attending this course? I thought it might be more fun if a few of us took the course together.

John, I've been looking for wilderness-oriented first aid training myself. The Trabuco Canyon setting looks a lot more pleasant than your average classroom. I'll probably sign up for this class as well.

Are you going to commute in both days, or camp there? As I'm exceptionally morning-challenged, I'd most likely camp at the park.

I'm not sure yet on the camping thing.

I'm inclined to camp out Saturday evening, but not sure. If I do "camp", all I'll do is sleep there and I'll probably eat Saturday dinner at one of the nearby restaurants.

John - awesome I'm glad you are in. I just faxed in my registration for the 4-5th as well.

Camping sounds perfect too! I am definitely staying over for the weekend.

Who else is in?

If you camp... remember... you will be tired and have reading to do.

Took a similar 2-day class from Wilderness Medicine Institute (part of NOLS) and found it very useful. The role-playing component helped 'convert' some of the book-learning to something approaching OJT. I highly recommend these sorts of courses for anyone who leaves the pavement (whether on foot or in a vehicle). If you're on the fence about a class like this - get off and sign up.

Good on ya for signing up, folks!

My registration seems finalized. I received an email this morning with a bunch of pdf attachments for reading and completion before the course starts in August.

I was thinking of taking the WFR course next year, but why do it in Southern California when you could do it in Utah with these guys?

Sounds like the class this weekend is short on attendees. Who all is going from here?

Trevor, John - thanks guys - what a great weekend, I had a blast.

I have to say John Jacobs is a great instructor, really praise his teaching methods and overall course. I would highly recommend this course to everyone.

Who is in for the WFR course next year...

I think I may do the Advanced-WFA (4 day course) and then the bridge (4 day course) to upgrade to the WFR. More manageable time-wise for me.

I loved his Horse-Zebra analogy too - will stick with me forever.

Craig, definitely agree. Great hanging out with you and John, and I'm up for continuing the training too. The only WAFA I see with John Jacobs is Monday, August 27, through Thursday, August 30, in Idyllwild. I'm not sure whether I can get away that week, but I'll look into it. Otherwise, maybe something next year, or whenever more classes are announced.

Great class.

John Jacobs is a superb teacher.

I want to take the WFR class, but it's long. If I did do the WFR thing, it would have to be in the two-part system. But even then I don't know. We'll see. I'll give it a few years.
