Generation Kill

Anyone following this series on HBO? I'm hooked. This show is written and directed as good, if not better, than 24. Although 24 is more of a secret service based show and Generation Kill is war time, I still relate the two shows.

I like the actors in Generation Kill better than the actors in 24. I was bummed when Denis Haysbert left 24 in season 4 (he did one show in season 5). D.B. Woodside sucks in comparison to Denis Haysbert as President in 24. I've also never been a Kiefer Sutherland fan, either, although I think he does a pretty good job in 24. It would be weird to see another actor replace Kiefer at some point, but I have a feeling "Jack Bauer" will eventually be killed off......or at least go missing for a while.

The actors in Generation Kill are basically nobody's. They're not rookies, but you've never seem them in hit box-office hits. Sometimes it's hard for me to get into a character if I've seem them play another role in another movie or show. Like Dustin Diamond for example. Dustin played "Screech" in Saved By The Bell; an after school series geared towards middle-school-aged kids. I could never see Dustin playing a badass in a war movie/series. I look at Dustin and just laugh now. But if you never knew "Screech", Dustin might be a hell of an actor. Likewise, I often relate Kiefer Sutherland to Stand By Me. But in Generation Kill, I have yet to relate any of the main characters to other films or TV shows.

I think Generation Kill is going to be a great series. I can't wait to see how it turns out. This show is now on my 2 show Tivo list with House. When season 7 of 24 comes back in January I'll add that to Tivo, too.

It makes me sick that you just compared David Simon and Ed Burns to a bunch of hacks from 24.

Simon and Burns are the creators and directors of the best show that has ever been televised -- The Wire.

24 is a bunch of phooey, in my opinion. You made me throw up in mouth a little bit when you put them next to each other. Ich.

But, more on topic, I have been watching Generation Kill. It's the typical Simon/Burns treatment of subject matter, which is awesome.

I'm anxious to see where Generation Kill goes; it's started rather slowly. But I'm definitely in it for the duration.

If you haven't seen The Wire, check it out on DVD. It's so worth the investment of time. Start with Season 1 and work your way through it. The star of the show is a decaying Baltimore and it's failed institutions, themes that anyone living in a major American city can identify with. It starts slow, but man, once it gets moving you'll wonder why other shows don't pay off like this.

Simon and Burns are the best thing going. I'm very excited that they are filming a pilot in September in New Orleans. Their plan is to focus on the New Orleans music scene while documenting the city's struggles to rebuild. The show will be called "Treme," after the local neighborhood that was technically the birthplace of jazz music.

I'm pretty pumped about it, because these guys "get it." They have a good, critical eye. I saw David Simon being interviewed by Charlie Rose the other night, and in his brief discussion about the new show he demonstrated a true understanding of what makes New Orleans a great city. I hope "Treme" get made and is awesome.

Oh, and regarding the actors, the driver of the humvee (James Ransone) played Ziggy Sabotka in Season 2 of The Wire.

The dude in the back seat who laments that he hasn't shot anybody yet played on that show "The Black Donnelly's" that came on NBC for a while.

I don't recognize anybody else.

I have never seen 24 but I really like the 2 episodes I have seen from GK.

The best line I've heard from the show came from a background conversation off camera discussing the weather forecast: "It's gonna be hotter than two rats fucking in a wool sock."

I thought episode 4 was horriable. I think it was the worse episode yet - even worse than episode 1. Episode 1 was really slow, but 4 was just boring. I hope episode 5 makes up for it.

Just watched this for the first time; saw the first episode. Most of this episode was lifted straight from Nathaniel Fick's excellent autobiography, One Bullet Away: The Making of a Marine Officer. It was nice to see it in cinema form, but I think the book was better.

I'm left feeling a bit bummed with the series. I know the story is over, but would have liked to see the series continue.
