How does the Pope crap in the woods?

No seriously. Since you guys don't sell any systems, what do you recommend for crapping in the Bush?

Bill Burke recommends the PETT, is that valid or is there something better?

1) quick hike away from campsight to the middle of nowhere, away from running water

2) dig a pit with folding shovel

3) do your duty

4) strike a match & drop it on the TP in the hole

5) watch it burn down to embers and burn OUT

6) fill hole back in and tamp down

David, the PETT (which has recently been renamed Cleanwaste, I think) is an excellent system, and when combined with a Porta Privy is perfect for populated areas. The system renders human waste safe enough to be disposed of in a public landfill. We used three of them for six people on a trip across Kenya this summer, and they worked very well. We buried the bags (which are claimed to be totally biodegradable), since the area were were in had no landfills.

No TP

You really don't need TP to do this successfully.

Like Blue said, go away from running water. Are you in a wetland area? -Try to find some higher ground. Your hole should be 6"-8" deep. Usually the toe of your boot works just fine. Do your business, try to urinate first, elsewhere, you'll see.

There's really no need for toilet paper, and open fires in many places are illegal, not to mention dangerous. If there is snow nearby, use a snowball, experiment with shapes. Sticks work very well, look for one that is bowed, lacking in rough bark, and knock down any branch protrusions with your knife. Rocks work very well too. Rough/sharp rocks will work too, you just need the right shape and you must go slow. Gather these items as you look for your location, it's usually best to get more than you think you'll need, say 10. Use them, and put them in the hole if you're in a populated locale, otherwise dispersion (throw them) can be a good thing. Be careful about all this in heavy bear country.

Mix it all up if you can handle it, bury it with your boots, pack it down, and disguise with a handful of leaves/sticks/etc. Put a nice rock atop to keep little critters from being interested.

Walk away satisfied that you are man enough not to need toilet paper.
