The Badger during one of his three Giro victories:

Look at the gearing. Is that a 55T big ring? It's hard to say for sure, but that shit is big. And the cassette looks to be 12-17. And he's in the 12.

Impressive.

I love these pics from the Colnago site.

Colnago workshop opened

His first workshop is a small, 25 sq metre shop at No. 10 Via Garibaldi, Cambiago. Ernesto’s father cuts down the family’s mulberry tree to make a workbench.

1955
His first Giro

Ernesto Colnago plays a star part in his first ever Giro d’Italia, assembling the bike that carries Fiorenzo Magni to the race leader’s pink jersey.

1957
Made-to-measure

Gastone Nencini triumphs at the Giro d’Italia on a bike with a special geometry tailor made for him by Ernesto.

1964
Italian team mechanic

From Sallanches in 1964 to Barcelona in 1973, Ernesto Colnago is mechanic for the Italian national team at 10 world championships.

Quote:
1971
Merckx wins Sanremo

Belgian great Eddy Merckx wins Milano-Sanremo on a Colnago bicycle with his own name on the down tube. It was Ernesto Colnago’s idea to create a bicycle with the ace of clubs logo and Merckx’s name. In one move, Colnago started the custom bicycle boom.

Quote:
1974
Colnago’s first team

The Colnago logo appears for the first time on the on the shorts of a professional team. Ernesto Colnago parts with the Molteni team to work with Giovanbattista Baronchelli at the Scic team of Renzo Fornari. A supremely talented rider who would never quite fulfil his promise, Baronchelli loses the Giro by just twelve seconds.

The Saronni era begins

Giuseppe ‘Beppe’ Saronni has a big win in the Tour de Romandie and then explodes into the Giro d’Italia, winning the Italian grand tour at only 21 years and 8 months. Colnago and Saronni’s close friendship endures to this day.

At a special ceremony at the Quirinale in Rome, Ernesto Colnago receives the prestigious title of Cavaliere del Lavoro (Knight of Industry) from the President of the Italian Republic, Giorgio Napolitano.

For Greg:

He was burned in 1984. Then he finally won in 1989:

I like this video. One of things I like about the Giro over the Tour is the weather. The Giro takes place earlier in the season and there's often rain and snow on the mountain passes. The music in this video adds a lot as well. Combine the music with Merckx's pedaling style and Merckx looks like brawler on the bike. It's pretty sweet when someone is a brawler without being a thug.

Five Tours. Five Giri. 19 Monuments. I could never understand how some people thought Lance Armstrong was the greatest.

I love this pic:

It's snowing but Merckx is in shorts and short sleeves. But then he has winter gloves on. And there's something so Rico Suave Cool Motherfucker about having a wool blanket tossed over a rider like that.
