This guy is a badass and his trip is epic:

I also like the fact that he just wears regular clothes and no helmet. A lot of the bike tourists go all Captain Safety with the nuclear yellow or blaze orange clothing and panniers, helmet, blinkie lights, and so on. I'm not saying those things don't have a place. It's just refreshing to see someone just riding without making safety or perceived safety some kind of internet contest.

Oh shit. Found the problem.

Only on one side of the head tube, so I should be able to limp back to the truck. It is a shitty photo... and yet, something about it I kind of like. Maybe it is just out of sadness.

By the time I arrived at the truck the bike was wobbling all over the place. Another inspection and there is only about 1/2 inch of metal still connecting the head tube and top tube.

I have been all over on this bike in NorCal, SoCal, OR, WA, MA, VT, ME and probably more that I am forgetting. I have done everything from racing cyclocross to touring with a trailer on it. I raced cyclocross on this bike the morning of my wedding with family watching. This bike has surprised more than a few roadies with how well it can keep up and has spent plenty of time at or near the front of a pace line, even with knobbies. It has also shown plenty of scornful Mtn bikers a thing or two, even on technical single track. I have crashed this bike countless times... Low sides, over backwards, over the bars, into trees and rocks...

Edit: Gabrielle just reminded me that we bought both her Salsa and mine at the same time. It was her first road bike and my first Cyclocross bike. We received the frames to our specs (hers red and mine clear) and I put them together in '95.

*sigh* This is a very sad day indeed.

And so, a new chapter begins...

Good article about the return of "performance steel bikes":

http://glorycycles.com/blog/performa...her-category-/

Like many other industries, the bicycle industry has to reinvent things to stay in business. These "performance steel bikes" remind me of framesets like the MX-Leader with its oversized and ovalized tubes, but now with carbon forks, larger steerers, and integrated headsets.

I wish Eddy Merckx cycles would come out with a frameset that looked like the Cinelli Nemo but with the paint job of the Liege 75 or Roubaix 70. That would make for a really really nice bike.

That Soulcraft is going to be sweet.

It's not too late to equip that frame with the new Dura-Ace groupsets:

Shimano was against the ropes after the SRAM eTap wireless drivetrain came out, but now Shimano looks booming again. Everything there looks full of win.

Only 122kph? Some riders went even faster on the Tour de France stage nine:

http://www.cyclingweekly.co.uk/news/...VI26T3OJQrb.99

130 kph? That's like 80 mph.

I don't have a computer, but I wonder if I've even reached 100 kph before. 80 mph is ridiculously fast. It's so fast that I previously I thought a rider would have reached some kind of terminal velocity well before 80 mph. I guess not.

The fastest speed I know I have reached on a bicycle is 55mph. It felt like I had reached ridiculous speed.

Tour de France: Ventoux stage shortened due to risk of 100km/h winds:

http://www.cyclingnews.com/news/tour...100km-h-winds/

What a bummer. But I guess the conditions were too heinous:

Quote:
"There were gusts measured at 104kph, and we would run the risk of having riders blown off their bikes as soon as they came out of the forest. And according to the forecast from Météo France, the wind will be even stronger tomorrow and the temperature will only be 4 degrees at the summit," Prudhomme said in Montpellier on Wednesday.

'Cross bikes rule.

I hate that people call them "gravel grinders" now.
