Different Watch Question

I sent my GMTII out to Jack at IWW for a relume job yesterday. Sitting here this morning contemplating my remaining watches. Some Hamilton field watches (both 1980's LLBean mechanicals on OD green military straps), a Seiko 200m diver, a Seiko tank watch and a round Tissot with white face and delicate hands (bleeecchchhhh), various Timex triathlon models. Anyway watching a little CNN at the same time and it occures to me that the US military once issued timepieces to enlisted and officers (WWII mainly but in later years too).

What watch is issued, if any, to which branches and units (special forces, etc.) these days? Didn't SEALS get Submariner at one time or was that just what they preferred to use?

As far as I know the military doesn't do a standard issue of watches anymore. There could be a few exceptions I don't know about though. I've never looked into it. I know for a fact that navy submariners don't get one.

LOL

Quit lying Shane...a navy recruiter confided to me that all naval personnel recieve a free personal Rolex Submariner each time they are deployed...

I have a blue and red bezel Seiko quartz SHC033 on a rubber band, bought cheap at a watch show. Anyone comment on why the all black, 21 - jewel auto version of the 200m Seiko (SKX173) retails for less than the quartz equivalent?

Issued: Timex, Marathon, Casio...

Issued watches are different from those sold by various px's, and special orders from unit quarter masters, like the recent X-33's for marine pilots in Iraq, or the custom modified seikos for some units in Korea or the ever present Suuntos.
The big three are all issued, with the bulk seems to be Marathons.
SOCOM is testing a version of the Casio DW5600 for use with spec ops units, recently got my hands on one and it was a terrible watch.

The Marathon general purpose is not a bad watch.

Ron, glad to hear that you sent your watch to Jack: he's done a few watches for me and has one now for some pvd work: takes awhile to get it back, though.

Yup, he said 8 weeks, but I'm prepared for more than that. Just excited about having the GMTII back, and bright!

Nice site about the Marathon. A GI buddy of mine, a US Army Ranger and a Major sports a much older Marathon, the black is wearing off the case revealing steel beneath it. A cool touch of patina. Another friend of mine, a US Army Major here at Ft. Benning sports a Submariner.
