What is the Holy Grail mobile unit?

I mean better than cup of a carpenter. Like some lady of the lake excalibur shit for HAM.

What do you guys think is the tip top best of the best?

C'mon my CB converts. What have you learned since I baptized you in the waters of the top DXers?

Well... I am still a bit too new to all of this to offer much advice...

The ICOM IC-208H that I got (following Craig's lead) is great. It does not have the power of your radio ( which I believe to be 65w) but at 50w (or is it 55w) I still have pretty good range. My only real gripe so far is that some of the menu items are not intuitive, and that I have to scroll through a bunch of basic set up menus (like display color and brightness) to change things like PL tones. Still, a relatively minor gripe as once a regularly used repeater is programmed into the memory one doesn't have to play with the set up.

There are a bunch of reviews on www.eham.com

I turned on the CB the other day... oh man, what a piece of shit.

Why would you be interested in the Holy Grail mobile unit for HAM? Don't you have to possess an amateur radio license to be a HAM radio operator?

Get your license and then you can come back and talk to us about being converted

My brother and dad are HAMs. I have the "technician class" book from radio shack or someplace. I'd love to complete the course, but its been years since dad has used his base unit and I've never seen my brother use his brand new mobile 2 meter unit bolted to the dash of his RRC. If I complete the course, what's the deal on listening in to "chat" frequencies or transmitting on my own?

There are books that list the repeaters in your area. There are also designated simplex frequencies. As a general rule I don't drive around with the CB or the 2m radios on. But the 2m radio is new so I've been listening in on a few repeaters.

It seems that there are "chat groups" that come on at certain times. They will all be chit chatting away for 30 min or so... then the repeater will be quiet. I think that if a group wanted a repeater for constant use they would make it a closed repeater to keep others off. There is one repeater here in the valley (designated an x-rated repeater... which I don't understand as off colour language is against the FCC rules...) that always has people talking. But it's a bit like a DiscoWeb thread... people bitching about other people, calling them names, trying to jam or overpower each others radio signals... etc etc. It's entertaining for about 5 min.

Ron, If you're licensed you can operate (transmit/receive) on the 2m band without issue. If you're unlicensed, you can't operate on any band, right Jack?

Right, unlicensed you can't do either, at least that's what I'm told. Anyway, need a winter project and it's either getting this license, or finding a way to trade out of a non-M BMW E30 into an M3 E36 sedan.

That would certainly slow down the posting and speed up licenses!

shit.
i don't want some pimped out roswell edition mobile unit.
I've already found the ideal units for my usage.

I have a customer who is obsessed with getting "the best" even though he doesn't now know exactly what that is or why nor will he likely ever know.
I'm just getting him the radio.

I'll work on my license.
I should have it just about the time you're done reading your Nancy Drew collection for the 496th time.
Stop trying to mess with my rebel image man:
