Amateur Radios (hand-held?)

so, before i pull the trigger on the kenwood TH-F6A i want to get everyone's thoughts on APRS.

my neighbor is going to pick up the kenwood TH-D7AG so he can use the packet operation feature with his gps. he does some crazy hunting trips to very remote places and a couple of times a day sends his location back to his home. sounds kinda cool actually. i've done a little sniffing around about APRS but was wondering if anyone had any experience actually using it.

APRS is too complicated for me.

I'll stick with the Icom T90.

I'm interested in APRS. The idea of being able to broadcast my position is cool but I don't want to tie up my 208H and I don't want to buy a third radio just for dedicated APRS use. It appears that the only two radios that appear to have APRS capability out of the box are the Kenwood TH-D7A you mentioned and the TH-D700 mobile. Both of these two radios are too ugly to merit consideration.

I'm thinking of trying to find a way to wire up my 276C to my F6A just for APRS beacon use since the F6A sits largely unused when I am in the vehicle, but I have more research to do before I commence any APRS project, and I have to say it's not very high on my priority list right now.

No, but if I set up an APRS beacon I would have the ability to. If I understand it correctly if my signal is picked up by a receiver that is capable of transferring that signal to the internet it would be possible to see my last transmission location on APRS sites like www.googleaprs.com.

I guess broadcast would be an inappropriate term.

I would be able to transmit my location ever 20-30 seconds using an APRS system.

I guess we all suffer from lapses in judgment from time to time. I'll wear my lumps.

At least sheki is studying to get his tech license. Goofs in terminology are much less egregious than operating without a license.

well my gps is an older unit and i don't believe it's NMEA-0183 compatible anyway. so, i'd have to pop for a brand new hand held and gps.

not to mention, i'll have to agree with craig, that TH-D7AG looks like a bad 80's cordless phone.

i'll probably go kenwood for now and wait for someone to come out with an all-in-one APRS radio/GPS display unit. if that ever happens.

thanks john. hitting HRO tomorrow. i'll try and find you on the repeater.

hey, i'm right there with you on the 25th for element 1 (unless of course all you bastards sneak down there before that).

for the last three days my commute both ways has consisted of gordon west and dits and dahs. i still have quite a ways to go.

is it just me, or is anyone else always confusing "A" & "N".

Cool, I hope you come out on TRW Day.

I really want to upgrade my license on TRW Day. I passed Element 3 last weekend, but passing Elements 2 and 3 without Element 1 still gets only Technician. I felt a little empty walking out of there with the same license class I had previously. I'm hoping to walk out of TRW Day with an Extra or General ticket.

A and N? That's the least of my worries. I seem to confuse a lot of the three-sound letters that end in dah, like W and K. P and X are also really hard for me. Strangely, L and F are no problem. I haven't even started on Q and Y, but I get the feeling they'll be hard for me as well. I seem to have more trouble with the dahs than the dits.

Ho is still busily packing orders and not trying to check the FCC site every few minutes. LOL.

So Jack, are you going to join us for TRW Day?

Or will "One Adam Twelve" be the closest you will ever get to a real call sign whenever you Tx on the amateur bands?

You're legal now. What's holding you back? Could it be the allure of the T90?
