Superwinch Hydraulic Winches

I was checking out Loma Linda University's Mobile Telemedicine Disaster Response Unimog today and noticed it had a Superwinch H15P 15k lb. hydraulic planetary winch. Seemed a little small for the vehicle (BTW- it was running 395/85R20 XZL's).

I did not realize that Superwinch made hydraulic winches but googled and found they made up to a H30P 30,000 lb. hydro as well.

I would post some pics but I forgot my camera and my phone pics are somehow only saved as bitmap on my computer.

Greg, Ramsey makes some worm driven hydraulic winches also. They are similar to the RE12000, but with a hydraulic motor. If I'm going Armageddon on a winch I want a worm drive gear set.

There are a few obvious problems with these winches on a LR. They are friggin huge for starters. They also have a big requirement for flow. Even an upgraded pump isn't going to cut it. These would need a PTO driven pump to make them worthwhile.

I gathered that reading the PSI and GPM ratings on the mfg sticker on the winch.

The truck was built by Unicat in Germany which builds alot of Dakar trucks. Pretty cool vehicle with alot of interesting satellite and radio comm equipt. Has a chain-driven drop-down unit in the back which lowers a yamaha quad for crew use.

Here's a pic from the web as my camera pics are crappy and won't load:
