We didn't do any extreme wheeling to justify a winch. We all had snatch straps with us. If we ever did get stuck the two army trucks we had with us.. would have glady ripped our bumpers off

I've only had my rig a few months so i have a excuse on the winch part anyhow. It's the next thing that will be ordered.

As we're headed for SoCal for turkey day, I thought we'd take some time and at least swing thru DV oh, Monday or Tuesaday ... likely just a hiway trip.

Weather's as unpredictable as usu this time of year there? Hope the wind/fires will settle down by then

You should be fine. The weather will be great. There is a large group camping at Panamint valley resort that week (West Side of the Park in Panamint Valley). The resort is offering ANYONE free turkey and all the fixins that stops in. It's a tradition of sort. Here's their site.
