Agreed, I've got some sorting out of things to tackle first. The tint isn't as dark as it looks in the picture, but it's there alright.

I would think they're grab handles for easier ingress. I'm not sure though.

I used a household garment steamer (Shark model) we had in the laundry room. I steamed the rear window first, working from a corner and got it going. Surprisingly, the sheets of tint film peeled from each window in a single piece leaving behind very little glue. The rear window too the longest because I was working around the defrost element. What glue was left behind I cleaned off with Goo Gone and a razor blade. Took a couple of hours from start to finish but not difficult at all.
