Changing your own oil is a very good way to economize on vehicle maintenance costs. However, please dispose of your used oil and filters properly.

Modern oil filters like the Genuine Parts Oil Filter remove particles by forcing the oil through paper-based media with very small pores. The pores are small enough to trap most particulate matter in the oil but are large enough to permit the oil to flow at sufficient rates to lubricate the engine. The technology behind this filtering medium is a compromise that has remained relatively unchanged since the 1930s. While it is necessary to filter the oil to remove harmful contaminants, it is equally important that the oil flow back into the engine fast enough to lubricate all the moving parts. A "perfect" oil filter would trap all particles down to 1 micron in size(about 1/70th the thickness of a human hair). Unfortunately, a filter with ports that small would also starve the engine of oil and cause engine failure. Filter medium developments over the years have increased the efficiency and life cycle for oil filters, but fluid dynamics still require the ports in the oil filters to remain at about the 25-micron size or larger to maintain sufficient oil flow. Tiny particulates that would otherwise flow through your oil filter to exacerbate wear on your engine are caught by FilterMAG's powerful Neodymium magnets. Older Land Rover with the level and drain plugs fitted have the option of running 90w gear oil in their swivel housings. If you have your vehicle serviced at your local Land Rover Dealer, then the dealer probably drained the gear oil and replaced it with some One Shot Swivel Housing Grease. The One Shot Swivel Housing Grease purportedly lubricates the CV joints for the life of the vehicle. Frankly, we opine this is a joke, and have never considered this to be a wise practice on an offroad vehicle that inevitably will encounter dirty conditions and suffer lubricant contamination. To facilitate routine maintenance, we like to mix the One Shot Swivel Housing Grease with 90w gear oil in a one-to-one ratio. This lets us obtain many of the One Shot Grease's benefits while diluting the One Shot Grease enough to drain the swivel ball housings more easily.

Don't stop at your swivel ball housings. Change your differential fluids regularly to maximize component life and smooth operation. Another very nice factory upgrade to older Land Rovers the fitment of the Magnetic Drain Plug to the front and rear differentials. The Magnetic Drain Plugs come standard on the Disco2, but fit both the drain plug and fill plug holes on all Land Rover solid axles such as the Defenders, Disco1, and Range Rover Classic.
