What is microfiber? "Microfiber" is a term used to describe ultra-fine extruded fibers and the technology used to develop and manufacture these types of fibers. Microfiber fibers weigh less than 0.1 denier. The fabrics and cloths made from these ultra-fine fibers provide incredible softness, scrubbing power, and water absorbency. The best way to understand microfiber engineered for cleaning is to look at a cross section of the fiber strand. In the photo above is a magnified image of a typical microfiber strand. Each strand of microfiber is sliced into polyester wedges that are attached to polyamide spokes. While microfiber is suitable for almost any purpose and makes an excellent general-purpose towel, changing the fiber design and weave allows a particular microfiber cloth to be optimized for scrubbing, polishing, or absorbing, or some combination of the foregoing.
The polyester wedges grab and scrub away microscopic particles of dirt while the polyamide spokes create a wicking action that pulls liquid into the fiber through capillary action. Premium-quality microfiber towels like our Expeditionware Microfiber Towels will absorb seven to eight times their weight in water, nearly double the capacity of the finest cottons. Other fabrics like cotton rely on the the gaps between each strand to grab particulates and moisture. Each individual strand can merely push or smear the dirt or water on a particular surface. In contrast, each microfiber strand lifts, scoops, and traps dirt and absorbs water. Furthermore, there are several hundred times more microfiber strands in each square inch of fabric (each square inch of microfiber fabric contains more than 100,000 microfiber strands), so there is a lot of scrubbing and absorbing power in every microfiber cloth. The difference is dramatic. Not only does each microfiber strand grab dirt and absorb water (something other fibers do not and cannot do), but there are many times more microfiber strands in each square inch of fabric. Oftentimes a microfiber cloth alone, without solvents or cleaning agents, can be used to clean an item that would otherwise require a cleaning agent with a cotton cloth. Interiors can be cleaned with a dry microfiber towel without any buffing action. Such is the scrubbing power of microfiber. Once soaked with water, microfiber towels also dry in one-third the time it takes cotton towels to dry. Microfiber is superior to cotton, silk, and wool towels in every way.
We offer many different kinds and sizes of microfiber towels, but the workhorse towels for most EE Customers will probably be the 16x16 Super Thick Microfiber Towels shown above.
The 16x16 Super Thick Microfiber Towels come standard with two different types of nap. One side of the towel has a finer nap and the other side has a thicker, more plush nap. This feature makes this towel very useful for general-purpose tasks. For example, use the thin nap for applying wax and polish and the plush side for removing wax and polish. Both sides of the Super Thick Microfiber Towels work very well at almost every task. The difference in nap comes into play only for very particular people and specialized tasks.
The 16x16 Super Thick Microfiber Towels are available in Blue, Green, Silver, White, and Yellow color options. Why the different colors? Because the color of the Towel is very useful in identifying the towel's intended use. For example, if one uses a silver-colored towel for cleaning alloy wheels, he will not want to use that same towel for polishing and waxing his paint. Conversely, he will not want to soil his white microfiber towel that he uses for waxing his paint by using that same towel on the wheels. One may use the silver-colored towel moistened with PB Blaster or MILITEC-1 for wiping down dirty tools before putting them away. If so, then he will not want to use that same towel for cleaning windows. The list is endless. Hence the different colors.
A good many of our products come in different colors for identification purposes and we rather like it that way. The Pelican Protector Cases shown above are available in Orange, Silver, Yellow, and Black colors so that the user need not open the cases to verify each case's contents. Instead, the user need only glance at the cases and he knows what is inside each case.
Our Wedco Jerrycans are available in several different colors to prevent mixing fluids. Imagine pouring water into your vehicle's fuel tank or contaminating your drinking water with petrol or diesel. That would not be good. Hence the color coding.
Many times the color coding is more for speed and convenience than anything else. These Ernst Manufacturing Tool Organizers are available in red and blue colors to help the user tell at a glance whether a particular socket rail is holding metric or fractional sockets. Our shop tool boxes are arranged in this fashion, with red designating fractional and blue designating metric. Even though each piece is marked with its size, it is easier to glance at each socket rail and eliminate half of the socket rails when looking for a particular tool.
Other times the the color coding is designed to prevent something disastrous and potentially deadly. Our WOLF Target Sport Shotgun Ammunition is color-coded by bore size to minimize the chances of mixing 12-Bore and 20-Bore shells. The 20-Bore shells are color-coded yellow while the 12-Bore shells are colored blue. Inserting a 20-Bore shell into a 12-Bore can be lethal, as the 20-Bore shell will slip right past the 12-Bore chamber's flange rebate and will headspace on the forcing cone, giving the appearance of an unloaded and safe gun. This will encourage and permit the loading of a 12-Bore cartridge into the chamber. There is sufficient clearance that the 12-Bore shell will chamber fully, right behind the 20-Bore shell that is headspaced on the forcing cone. Pulling the trigger on the 12-Bore cartridge will result in a ruptured barrel and quite possibly an exploded gun. Hence the colors. (The same danger of mixing cartridges occurs with almost every shotshell size. It occurs with the 16- and 28-Bore shotshells, and also with the 10- and 16-Bore shotshells. Always ensure that you are using the proper ammunition with your firearm.)
Our PMI Recovery Gloves are available in heavyweight and lightweight fabrics. The heavyweights are brown cowhide while the lightweights are white goatskin. Sure, it's possible to tell the difference between the two weights without looking at the color, but the color is patently visible and more easily discerned than the material thickness or glove weight. Why make it harder than it needs to be? Just look at the color.

Here is a close-up of the waffle weave texture. The ridges in the waffle weave act like little squeegees. These squeegees push the water into the cupped portions of the fabric and give the fabric greater time to absorb the water. Unlike very thick towels with a plush nap, it is easy to wring water out of the Gray Waffle Weave Microfiber Towel when it becomes saturated with water. Simply wring out the towel and keep on drying.
Do not believe that the waffle weave texture is abrasive to your vehicle's paint. It is not. Above is a magnified view of the Gray Waffle Weave Microfiber Towel's texture. Each fine fiber is several hundred times smaller than a strand of cotton and will not harm your paint. We use nothing but microfiber cloths on our Carl Zeiss Victory FL Binoculars. In fact, we use nothing but microfiber on all of our optical equipment and have ever since Microfiber became available. Why? Because microfiber is easier on fine optics than the finest cotton cloths.
John uses nothing but microfiber to maintain his personal firearms. The Carl Zeiss Diavari telescope shown above is now discontinued and there will certainly be no more like this one. John treasures this telescope and maintains it with nothing but microfiber cloths since he purchased it second-hand several years ago.
Telescopes, binoculars, and spotting telescopes are not the only optics involved in shooting. All responsible shooters never shoot without proper eye and ear protection. Proper eye protection is never constructed with glass lenses but rather with some form of impact-resistant plastic. This plastic is largely shatterproof but is susceptible to scratching. To exacerbate the situation, most high-quality glasses are coated with anti-reflective coating, which is delicate and quite susceptible to damage. We use nothing but microfiber on all of our field glasses.
The OMEGA Speedmaster Professional Wrist Chronograph features a shock-resistant hesalite crystal that is designed to withstand shocks and impacts that would shatter a glass or sapphire crystal. While the hesalite crystal is very strong, it is also prone to scratches accumulated from daily use. John maintains his crystal with the Blue Suede Microfiber Towel and some Wenol. After a cleaning session, the scratches are gone and the crystal is perfectly smooth and clear.

This Accuracy International AWM (Arctic Warfare Magnum) represents a weapon for which the Gun Care Kit could be used. The Blue Suede Microfiber Towel could be used for the telescope's delicate lenses and anti-reflective coatings. The Blue Microfiber Towel could be reserved for tasks involving bore cleaner, such as wiping down a dirty cleaning rod or mopping up bore cleaner from the weapon's action or comb. Blue makes intuitive sense because bore cleaners contain ammonia that turn copper fouling in the bore blue. The Blue Suede Microfiber Towel and Blue 12x12 Microfiber Towel are different enough in color, size, and texture that there is little risk of confusing the two. The Green Microfiber Towel could be used to wipe down the stock, because the stock is green in color. Right away, the advantages of the color coding come into play, as using the Blue Microfiber Towel (which has been contaminated with bore cleaner) on the telescope would quickly ruin the anti-reflective coating on the lenses and could also compromise the plastic construction of the buttstock.
One might use the Yellow Microfiber Towel as an oily rag moistened with PB Blaster or MILITEC-1 for wiping down the steel portions of the weapon before storing it (all fine weapons should be wiped down before being cased or stored). That scheme leaves us with pink and white, which the user could reserve for other tasks. The Hensoldt 10x42 telescope on this rifle features a finish consisting of baked-on black paint. The user might use the White Microfiber Towel for waxing and polishing the telescope's delicate painted finish. That is just one possible scheme. The possibilities really are endless.
This rifle/watch/knife combination is typical of what many firearms enthusiasts own and use. The rifle is a Heckler & Koch HK300 with a Kahles telescope and HK05 Claw Mount. The watch is an OMEGA Speedmaster Professional Wrist Chronograph. The knife is a Benchmade 710. The Complete Microfiber Gun Care Kit is very useable for maintaining these pieces. The Blue Suede Microfiber Towel could be used for wiping down the telescope lenses and the Speedmaster's plastic crystal. Because the Blue Suede Microfiber Towel will be used on the telescope's delicate anti-reflective coatings, we don't want to contaminate it with wax or polish. So we will use the White Microfiber Towel for waxing and polishing the Speedmaster's plastic crystal when it suffers scratches. We can use the same White Microfiber Towel for waxing and polishing the Kahles telescope's black paint finish. We can use the Blue Microfiber Towel for wiping bore cleaner off the HK300's cleaning rod and bronze brushes. This makes intuitive sense because the ammonia in bore cleaners turns copper a blue color. The Pink Microfiber Towel could be reserved for wiping down the walnut buttstock on the HK300. Wood does not corrode but it certainly does not like to be covered in sweat and grime for long periods. Wiping down a walnut buttstock is necessary for proper maintenance. Pink is not brown like the walnut, but since there is no Brown Microfiber Towel, the pink is close enough. If we wanted, we could put a little Pledge on the Pink Microfiber Towel, as many rifleman do, to care for the wood. We certainly would not want to get Lemon Pledge on anything else.
Let's use the Yellow Microfiber Towel as an oily towel moistened with PB Blaster or MILITEC-1 for wiping down the steel portions of the rifle before putting it away. The HK300 rifle and HK05 Claw Mount have a blued steel finish that is susceptible to rusty fingerprints and other corrosion if not wiped down with an oily rag before storing the weapon. You can see why you would not want to use the Yellow Microfiber Towel to clean the telescope lenses or for wiping down the wooden buttstock. The color coding is a very useful feature.
That leaves us the Green Microfiber Towel, which we could use for any number of different tasks. The Benchmade 710's blade gets covered in sticky goo from opening boxes every day. We could use the Green Microfiber Towel with brake cleaner or Blaster Products Decal & Sticker Remover to remove the goo. These color classifications may or not may make intuitive sense to you. So create your own. The possibilities are endless.
The Compete Microfiber Gun Care Kit is also useful to the shotgunner, who has different needs from the rifleman or pistolero. There are no telescopes involved in practical shotgunning, however the shotgunner will use the Blue Suede Microfiber Towel for cleaning his shooting glasses. Probably the main fundamental in successful shotgunning is to get a hard, razor-sharp focus on the target, and clean shooting glasses are required for that. Quality shooting glasses feature delicate anti-reflective coating on the lenses, so the shotgunner will not use this towel for any other purpose than to keep his shooting glasses squeaky clean and crystal clear.
The shotgunner can use the Blue Microfiber Towel for wiping down bore cleaner from the cleaning rod and bronze brush required to clean the shotgun's bores properly. There really are no copper deposits in shotgun bores, but the bronze brushes do turn blue after exposure to bore cleaner. The shotgunner could reserve the Pink Microfiber Towel for wiping down the sweaty walnut buttstock and forend after a long round of sporting clays. Wood does not corrode but it certainly does not like to be covered in sweat and grime for long periods. Wiping down walnut is necessary for proper maintenance. Pink is not brown like the walnut, but since there is no Brown Microfiber Towel, the pink is close enough. If he wanted, the shotgunner could put a little Pledge on the Pink Microfiber Towel. Because the pink color means "wood" to this shotgunner, he would not use the pink towel on other items and contaminate them.
Sporting Clays shooters must carry enough ammunition to complete an entire round, which usually means they must carry approximately 150 rounds. John likes to carry his spare ammunition in the Galco Sporting Collection Four Box Shell Carrier. After every few rounds of Sporting Clays, John likes to maintain his Four Box Shell Carrier with some light leather dressing and brown shoe polish. For this, he could use the White or Green Microfiber Towels remaining. He would be more likely to use the Green Microfiber Towel for this task, and carry the White Microfiber Towel on his person as a handkerchief to wipe away perspiration.

There is no right or wrong way to color code the different towels. Use whatever system makes sense to you. Cleaning microfiber towels is very easy. Simply wash the microfiber towels in warm water and use liquid detergent. Do not use hot water because polyester and polyamide both shrink in hot water. If you wash in hot water the fibers will shrink and the microfiber's effectiveness will be diminished. Do not wash with other fabrics, as the microfiber is so grabby by nature that it will grab a hold of the lint from other towels. Do not use fabric softeners of any kind. Fabric softener is composed of microscopic granules that will become lodged in the microfiber and reduce its ability to absorb water, and grab particulates. Microfiber is so soft, it doesn't require fabric softeners in any case. Do not dry above medium heat. Treat microfiber towels the same as you would your delicate clothing. Drying with high heat is worse that washing in hot water. Line drying the old-fashioned way is best of all. Basically, wash the microfiber alone in warm water and line dry and you will do fine. Even if you did screw up, the microfiber would still work better than cotton towels.
