Which Shocks Do We Recommend?
As with choosing the proper Old Man Emu Springs, choosing the proper shock can be a bit intimidating to the average Land Rover owner because of the numerous models of shocks available. We usually recommend the following to our customers.
For the vast majority of our customers, we recommend the NitroCharger Sport Shock Absorbers. These are superb shocks and will provide many thousands of miles of hard use.
The NitroCharger Sports combine the valving of a monotube design with the durability of a twin-tube shock body. The NitroCharger Sport's new valving system creates damping through disc deflection rather than aperture restriction. This system allows for a much more open, free-flowing piston design that reduces the heat generation and fluid aeration that can lead to shock fade.
Durability was a primary consideration in the development of the NitroCharger Sport line, and Old Man Emu replaced the steel stone shield with a polymer shield.
And while the NitroCharger Sport uses monotube valving, the twin-walled shock body protects the shock from denting (if a monotube shock dents, it will be rendered inoperable). The NitroCharger Sports are firmer and offer greater stability and control over a larger range of weight capacities than past NitroCharger designs.
For the Defender 90, Defender 110, Discovery Series I, and Range Rover Classic, we recommend the 60037 NitroCharger Sport Front Shocks and 60039 NitroCharger Sport Rear Shocks.
All bushings and fasteners required for installation are included with the 60037 and 60039 NitroCharger Sports.
The 60039 has an eyelet on top for mounting on the factory or Expeditionware Shock Mounts.
The bottom of the 60039 NitroCharger Sports may be installed differently to suit different shock mounts. For vehicles without bushing cups, centering washers are provided with the shocks.
Vehicles that still have their bushing cups will not require the centering washers.
For Discovery Series II owners, we recommend the 60024 NitroCharger Sport Front Shocks and the 60025 NitroCharger Sport Rear Shocks.
The 60024 and 60025 come with integral bushings for proper mounting on your Discovery Series II. Because of the design of Disco2 shocks, installation of the 60024 and 60025 Sports is slightly easier than mounting the 60037 and 60039 Sports.
However, the 60025 can be installed inverted if you are not careful. Therefore, be sure to have the polymer stone shield on top when installing the 60025 rear Sports.
If you want the best that Old Man Emu has to offer and price is no object, then there is the LTR shock. While some decry the LTR shocks because they are the same length as all the NitroCharger line of shocks and don't give additional of suspension travel or flex, knowledgeable people know that suspension flex does not necessarily lead to more performance. Long travel rear suspensions greatly destabilize the vehicle on off-camber trails and are more for sex appeal than they are for real-world performance. If you want the best-performing shocks for your vehicle, look no farther than the Old Man Emu LTR.
Old Man Emu's LTR shocks are all hand-assembled using only the best-quality components, and are completely serviceable and rebuildable. The shock absorbers are valved to ensure excellent ride characteristics in even in the most arduous conditions. All LTR shocks can be adjusted to the amount of internal air pressure to suit the user's particular requirements. For example, offroad racers can inject a greater amount of nitrogen into the shocks for added damping in extreme conditions. Expeditioners and general offroaders can inject a lesser amount of nitrogen for increased comfort on rough roads.
For customers who require high performance or simply demand the best equipment available, we recommend Old Man Emu's Long Travel Remote shocks. The LTR shocks are very heavy duty and built for extreme conditions like those encountered in expedition driving that involves long hours of fast driving over washboard and bumpy trails. Unfortunately, LTR shocks are not currently available for the Discovery Series II.
The firmness of the LTR shocks can be adjusted by increasing or decreasing the amount of nitrogen injected into them. The higher the pressure inside the shock, the firmer the ride the shocks will provide. Old Man Emu recommends 40-80 psi for standard offroad conditions, and 80-100 psi for competition applications. We use 100 psi in all our shocks for all conditions.
The LTR shocks are also completely serviceable and rebuildable. All shocks wear over time and their valving becomes squishy. The LTR shocks can be disassembled and rebuilt to like-new condition. Furthermore, the user can obtain different performance characteristics by changing the oil inside the shocks with fluids of different viscosity. While LTR shocks are expensive, they will last the life of your vehicle.
LTR shocks are powdercoated bright yellow and not painted. All shocks are exposed to chipping from stones kicked up by the wheels and tires. The chipped areas reveal the steel underneath and the shocks corrode where chipped. The powdercoated finish on the LTR shocks resists chipping substantially better than painted finishes on standard shocks and will keep the LTRs looking as good as they perform over long-term and heavy use.
The reservoirs on all LTR shocks are connected to the shock bodies using CAD-plated fittings and stainless-braided Teflon hoses. Every component of the LTR shocks is built to withstand the toughest use under extreme conditions.
All LTR shocks come complete with all of the necessary bushings to mount the shocks and the brackets to mount the reservoirs, as well as complete instructions for fitting and adjusting the LTR shocks for optimum performance.
On the Discovery, the front shock reservoir mounts onto the spring perch while the rear mounts onto the frame outrigger immediately in front of the rear wheel well.
The LTRs can be mounted in many different ways. One of our customers mounted his LTR04Rs with the reservoir mounted to the shock body. The result is very nice.
On the Defender, the front shock reservoir mounts onto the shock tower rather than the spring perch. The rear reservoir mounts to the frame inside the rear wheel well. To make the rear reservoirs more visible on John's Defender, he attached the rear reservoir to the wheel well rather than the frame.
For best results with Old Man Emu shocks, use Old Man Emu Springs. The two are matched with one another in terms of rates and lengths.
