The RRL950RA Expedition Roof Rack is available only for the Disco1, and is nearly identical to the roof rack used on the Camel Trophy vehicles. Both racks are manufactured by Safety Devices. The primary difference between the Expedition and the genuine Camel Trophy Rack is that the Expedition is gutter mounted while the Camel Trophy racks were mounted through holes in the roof and were attached to Safety Devices rollover protection fitted to these vehicles.
There are four different versions of the Highlander to suit different Discovery models: (1) a low version for the Disco1; (2) a tall version for the Disco1; (3) a low version for the Disco2; and (4) a tall version for the Disco2. Unlike other racks, Safety Devices racks are made precisely for a specific vehicle.
The low version of the Highlander for the Disco1 is on the left; the high version for the Disco2 is on the right. The high version of the Highlander is taller off the roof to give the clearance for the sunroofs fitted to luxury models of the Discovery.
The Disco2 is longer than the Disco1 and takes a longer rack. Safety Devices racks are not "one size fits all" as with other, inferior, racks. Each rack is made for each vehicle. Each rack follows the roof contours for each vehicle. Each rack has its mounting feet above the roof pillars for structural integrity. Incidentally, if you have a Disco1, do not fit a Disco2 rack, and vice versa. If you can't afford the correct rack for your vehicle, go without a rack.
All versions of the Highlander Roof Rack, whether for the Disco1 or Disco2, whether low or high, feature four tabs up front for mounting auxiliary lights such as these Hella 4000 units.
Every roof rack needs a good ladder. For your Highlander Roof Rack, whichever version you have, we recommend the Land Rover Genuine Parts Rear Ladder. Accept no substitutes.
Freelander owners have heretofore been unable to fit a suitable rack for their vehicles. That situation has changed with the introduction of the Outrack to the American market.
Just as the Highlander is made specifically for the Discovery and for no other vehicle, the Outrack is made specifically for the Freelander and for no other vehicle. The Outrack's shape mirrors that of the Freelander's roof line. This is not a generic rack that is marketed for the Freelander market. The Outrack is identical to the racks fitted to the Land Rover G4 Challenge Freelanders.
Safety Devices also makes roof racks for the P38 and SIII Range Rovers. These elegant vehicles deserve elegant racks, and the Overlander and Eventer racks are. Land Rover uses both the Overland and Eventer roof racks as Land Rover Genuine Parts for both the P38 and SIII Range Rovers. The Overlander and Eventer are more than just pretty. They are brute strong and can handle very heavy loads.
Safety Devices also makes rear ladders for both the P38 and SIII Range Rovers. These ladders make accessing the roof racks much easier and are recommended for every Range Rover that is fitted with a roof rack. They also do not destroy the factory lines of these beautiful machines. In fact, Land Rover uses the Safety Devices rear ladders as the Land Rover Genuine Parts rear ladders for both the P38 and SIII Range Rovers.
All Safety Devices racks can be fitted with accessory flooring if desired.
Safety Devices racks are the best of their kind. We use nothing else on our own vehicles and neither do the people we wheel with. Every roof rack in the photo above is a genuine Safety Devices roof rack.
Safety Devices racks are of the highest possible quality. Fasteners are manufactured from stainless steel. All tubes are mitered before assembly for a perfect fit and maximum strength. All steel surfaces are phosphated before being coated with a satin black powdercoat finish for maximum corrosion resistance. Safety Devices roof racks can be exposed to the elements for years without suffering corrosion. Safety Devices roof racks can also carry very heavy loads without suffering bends or cracks.
Long before we became Safety Devices distributors, we used Safety Devices racks on our own vehicles. John's Defender is fitted with a Safety Devices Defender 90 Expedition Roof Rack and Defender 90/110 Rear Ladder. John uses his rack to hold his Pelican Protector Cases when he goes on longer trips that require extra luggage.
Ho's Discovery is fitted with a low version of the Disco1 Highlander Roof Rack. This rack was standard fitment to the XD Discoveries built by Land Rover Special Vehicles.
The Disco XD is not the only Land Rover that comes factory fitted with Safety Devices products. All North American Specification Defenders came standard with Safety Devices products fitted. Both this Defender 90 and Defender 110 belonging to Sue and Neil Buchelt are factory fitted with Safety Devices rollover protection. When you're doing Lion's Back, the Safety Devices rollover protection becomes even more important.
All North American Specification Defender 110's came factory standard with a full external roll cage built by Safety Devices. Safety Devices also built the roof rack and rear ladder. When Land Rover had to get the Defender to meet United States safety specifications, Land Rover chose Safety Devices. Safety Devices rollover protection products are officially certified to meet or exceed safety standards set by FIA for racing vehicles around the world. Even if you don't race, offroading can be a dangerous activity. When it comes to safety equipment and load-carrying equipment, choose only the best. The same engineering and technology that go into making Safety Devices' effective rollover protection goes into every Safety Devices roof rack and ladder.
North American Specification Defender 90's were also fitted with rollover protection that was built by Safety Devices. The D90 roof racks, however, were optional and available through Land Rover North America parts channels. The Safari Roof Rack and rear ladders were both manufactured by Safety Devices and sold to Land Rover.
Here is a photo of the Safety Devices rollover protection that was fitted to the Camel Trophy vehicles. This rollover protection is available only on a special-order basis.
